North Whatcom Fire and Rescue provides service to 182 square miles of residential, recreational, industrial and agricultural land in Whatcom County. In the summer months the population of 44, 040 grows by 10-12,000 as visitors flock to the Semiahmoo and Birch Bay resort communities. The northern end of the district runs East from Boundary Bay and the City of Blaine in the for 36 miles along the Ca

nadian Border. On the south we border Lake Whatcom and encompass the unincorporated NE corner of the City of Bellingham East of SR 539 and cover northern Whatcom County north of the City of Ferndale. NWFR is a combination fire department, relying on both career and volunteer firefighters to provide fire suppression and emergency medical services. Our career firefighters are all medically trained to the level of EMT-Basic. NWFR staffs sixty full paid personnel of which forty-nine are full paid sworn combat personnel, six support personnel, and seventy-six part-paid and volunteers. The fire district operates from thirteen fire stations with four full paid engine companies with two of those companies being crossed-staffed to ladder trucks, and one part-paid engine company.

Whatcom County Fire District 21 covers 153 square miles across Blaine, Birch Bay, Semiahmoo, Custer, Delta, Laurel, Wiser Lake, and Northwood areas. When an emergency call comes in, our crews are racing against the clock across a large and growing service area.

That's why adding capacity matters. Additional stations mean shorter response times and in an emergency, the difference of minutes and seconds can mean the difference between life and death.

Did you know that we have three stations that are staffed 24/7 with three firefighters on every shift?

Three firefighters is the nationally recognized minimum for a safe emergency response in the fire service and our firefighters are the greatest tool in our toolbox. That level of readiness takes dedicated personnel, training, and stable funding. Our upcoming levy lid renewal will help us maintain safe staffing levels.

This August, voters in our district will decide on a levy lid renewal, not a new tax, but a continuation of the funding that keeps Whatcom County Fire Protection District 21 running strong. Renewing this levy allows us to:

✅ Maintain current service levels to keep response times fast when seconds matter

✅ Replace aging vehicles and equipment so our crews have reliable tools for every call

✅ Staff an additional station, bringing help closer to more neighborhoods, faster

This week our crews have been teaming up with local law enforcement, EMS partners, and Airlift Northwest for a multi-company operations active shooter response exercise.

Training like this brings our fire, police, medical, and air transport teams together to practice coordinated response for fast triage, safe entry, and rapid patient transport so that when a real emergency happens, every agency works together as one team.
