More than just a chance to have fun, play is serious business when it comes to a child's health and development. From peek-a-boo to pat-a-cake and hide-and-seek to hopscotch, the many forms of play enrich a child's brain, body and life in important ways.

When and together, their bond is strengthened. When parents get down on the child's level and play with them, it creates a sense of security and trust. It shows the child that their parents are interested in their world and want to share their joy.

Guided play, possible in the home and in the classroom, differs from free play in being initiated by the adult while letting the child drive her learning towards a specific goal. For example, learning in Montessori classrooms and children's museums is always initiated by an adult who reflects on learning goals. But children themselves drive the exploration within such guided learning environments—giving them choice and voice.
