Lynnwood Utilities Keeps Our Fire Hydrants Ready! 💧🚒

Over the summer, our Utilities team completed an important maintenance project - approximately 1,100 fire hydrants were painted and charged!

What does “charged” mean? While we weren’t able to flush hydrants this year due to drought conditions, our team still completed important inspections and maintenance, including checking components, exercising valves, and looking for leaks to help ensure each hydrant remains safe, identifiable, and ready when it’s needed.

And the fresh paint isn’t just cosmetic! It helps:

🛡️ Protect against corrosion from rain, moisture, road salt, and chemicals
👀 Improve visibility so hydrants can be quickly located by emergency responders
🚒 Support safety by keeping hydrants recognizable and accessible
🔧 Preserve our infrastructure as part of a broader preventive maintenance program

A fresh coat of paint may look simple, but it plays an important role in maintaining these critical pieces of our water system! Great job to our Utilities Maintenance team!

♻️Behind the Scenes of Recycling!

In August, the Lynnwood Waste Reduction Team toured the Republic Services Recycling Facility and Community Learning Center in Seattle!

We got a behind-the-scenes look at recycling technology, learned more about the upcoming Recycling Reform Act, and saw how materials are sorted and processed.

Each year, the facility processes 200,000 tons of recyclables—a climate benefit equivalent to planting 500,000 acres of forest or taking 85,000 cars off the road! 🌲🚗

💡 Recycling Fact: Loose plastic bags and bubble wrap can get caught in machinery and damage sorting systems. These items belong at special store drop-off bins, not in your curbside recycling.
