Volunteer Spotlight: Richard

Tell us a little about yourself. Where did you grow up?

I had a pretty unique upbringing. I grew up all over the country because my stepfather was a Master Chief in the U.S. Coast Guard. I spent time in Alaska, Washington, and Virginia, zigzagging back and forth as our family moved. I lived in Virginia and attended Edison High School and Fairfax High School for a few years before moving back to Alaska, where I graduated. After all that moving around, Seattle became home, at least for now. Someday I'd like to retire back on the East Coast.

What did you do before volunteering with Habitat?

I've worked hard my entire life and have worn a lot of hats. After high school, I worked in Alaska's fishing industry, doing everything from cannery work to commercial fishing. I worked on boats catching halibut, salmon, and Dungeness crab around Kodiak Island. It's tough work, but it taught me a lot about perseverance and teamwork. Later, I built a career as a machinist and spent about 35 years in manufacturing and technical trades. I've worked in aerospace, electronics, warehousing, healthcare, and window manufacturing. I also worked as a technician at UW Medical Center and spent years operating heavy equipment and training others in warehouse logistics.

How did you get involved with Habitat for Humanity?

I came to Habitat through the AARP. I started volunteering at the Smokey Point Habitat Store in 2023, working at the pricing table. Since then, I've taken on different responsibilities and eventually found my place in the tool department. My background with tools, machinery, and technical work made the transition feel natural. Over time, I've been able to help train other volunteers and support the team however I can.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Habitat?

The people are what keep me coming back. I've enjoyed working closely with volunteers and staff like Jim, Al, Vicky, Mercy, Michael, and Chris. Everyone brings a different style and personality, but we work well together and support each other. I especially enjoy mentoring newer volunteers and sharing some of the knowledge I've gained over the years.

Any favorite Habitat memories or shout-outs?

One thing that stands out is how much the people make me laugh. Working with Chris is always memorable. I'd also like to give a shout-out to Chris, Mercy, Michael, Jim, Al, and Vicky. They all bring something different to the team. Chris has excellent people skills and does a great job leading and connecting with everyone. Mercy has taught me a lot and helped me grow in pricing. The whole team has made Habitat a place where I enjoy coming in and contributing.

Cars for Homes donor spotlight: Edgar G.

"I debated whether to sell or give away my car that I have had since 2004. I love my car. It has been reliable for the last 22 years. We have traveled together from California to Oklahoma to Washington State. It has never left me stranded. But it has gotten old and I have had to replace old parts, it has been through a couple of small accidents, so it bears the marks. But its engine, the heart of it, even at 207,000 miles still beating strong. I can imagine getting going on for a few more years."

"But it is time for me to let him go. Often, I have been told by my family to get a new car, but I have said, “I don’t need one. I have my car.” My daughter was going to get my old car, but she was embarrassed to drive it. I wasn’t. I drove proud anywhere with my Honda. So today, I am releasing it."

"Thank you, dear Honda, for all the rides and being my partner for more than 22 years. I will miss you!"

As we wrap up with our fiscal year, we are celebrating the amazing numbers that our Stores achieved:

Our Stores generated $1.3 Million in store revenue to support Habitat’s mission to build homes, communities, and hope.

Diverted 13 million pounds of waste from landfills through 1.2 million recycled items.

37,101 customers shopped at our Lynnwood and Everett Habitat Stores, supporting the Habitat mission.

Since joining Habitat for Humanity Snohomish County in February, Eric has quickly become a valued member of the volunteer team with over 600 hours of service. What began as a way to gain experience for his resume while searching for a job has grown into a meaningful commitment to serving the community.

Now working at Home Depot, Eric continues to volunteer his time at Habitat because he genuinely enjoys being part of the team. He credits much of his positive experience to the staff and volunteers who have welcomed him and helped him learn new skills along the way.

"I've learned a lot from everybody here," Eric shares. "They're very helpful and have taught me so many things."

One person who has made a particularly strong impact is Assistant Manager Mercy. Eric appreciates her patience, expertise, and willingness to teach. From safe lifting techniques to efficient ways of moving inventory, Mercy has helped him develop practical skills that he uses both at Habitat and beyond.

A lifelong Snohomish County resident, Eric grew up in the Lynnwood area and had heard of Habitat for Humanity before volunteering. Originally, he hoped to join a homebuilding project, but when an opportunity wasn't available, he started helping at the Store instead. As it turns out, he discovered a role he loves.

Eric's favorite part of volunteering is working in the donation area. He enjoys meeting donors, hearing their stories, and never knowing what might arrive next.

"You never know what's going to come in," he says. "That makes it fun."

He also appreciates the community he's found through volunteering. Eric says he's enjoyed getting to know fellow volunteers and especially admires longtime volunteer Dave for his initiative and dedication.

"He just goes out of his way to help people," Eric says. "If something needs fixing, he notices it and takes care of it. I really respect that."

When he's not volunteering or working, Eric likes staying busy with projects and repairs around the house. Although he'd love to have a dog someday, his packed schedule keeps him on the go. He also dreams of traveling more, with sunny California high on his list of places to visit.

A self-proclaimed baseball fan, Eric proudly chooses the Mariners over the Seahawks and enjoys following the team when he has the chance.

We're grateful for Eric's dedication, positive attitude, and willingness to jump in wherever help is needed. Thank you, Eric, for helping make the Store a welcoming place for our donors, shoppers, and volunteers alike!
