Year-Round Edible Gardening: Fall & Winter

Yes, you can grow an edible garden year-round! And keeping your garden growing and protected over winter is an important part of growing a healthy and happy spring and summer garden. In this class you will learn how and what to grow for fall and winter crops, how to prepare and protect your garden soil and fall crops using cover crops, season extension methods, and much more. We'll also have FREE seeds available from the Lynnwood Seed Library!

Restocked! Time to seed your fall and winter crops such as root crops like beets and carrots, and lettuces. 🥕 🥬

There’s also a FREE handout with lots of info about summer and fall gardening. And a handout about growing tomatoes including how to prune them for airflow.

We also got a cute little donation of mostly bean seeds. If this was you, please let me know the age of these seeds so I can add that info. I left them out on top of the seed library since they have a little guide with them that tells which seed is which. However, I do not know the age of these seeds.

We appreciate your donations so much and want to ensure everyone has access to seeds that will grow well for them. If you donate seeds, please make sure they are dated with the date HARVESTED or sold. 💚

Any guesses as to what seed I’m saving in this video? It’s one of the easiest crops to grow in spring and fall and let go to flower to self seed and save enough seeds from one plant for the whole neighborhood (by donating them to the seed library!).

Seed saving is a great way to give back to your community. Save and label your seeds and share them with the seed library or bring to the seed swap.

Some seeds that are the easiest to harvest and save (that don’t cross pollinate) are:

Calendula
Marigolds
Chamomile
Dill

Save seeds from these crops only if the original seed was an open pollinated or heirloom variety. Hybrid varieties will not grow true to the original variety.

Tomatoes - make sure the fruit has fully ripened and the seeds are rinsed and fully dried
Beans and peas - let pods dry fully on the vine

Seed library restocked! Thanks to our trusty volunteers for keeping the seeds stocked.

Time to get your beans in the ground! Be sure to read the label and make a note about trellising needs. Some beans are bush beans and will grow without support, some are pole beans, meaning they need a pole or something to climb. 🙂

Just restocked! Time to get your squash and bean seeds for direct seeding around the first part of May! Melons a bit later depending on temps. I like to start my cucumbers, squash, melons, and sunflowers in newspaper pots in the house about two weeks before planting time. Newspaper pots are so easy to make and are free. Comment below if you would like me to send you info on how to make them.

The Lynnwood Seed Library is proud to support other local organizations with the donation of garden seeds! Washington West African Center grows food for the community and offers garden plots at Grace Lutheran Church in Mukilteo so more folks have access to grow their own fresh food.
