God Speed Deputy Chief Daniel T. Derrick. Thank you for all you did for the Fire/EMS Service.

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Lake Geneva Fire Department Deputy Chief Daniel T. Derrick, who left us this afternoon. He is pictured here with his two sons.

Chief Derrick devoted 54 years of his life to serving others, beginning his career with the Lake Geneva Fire Department on January 4, 1972. As a second-generation firefighter, service was more than a profession for Dan—it was a calling rooted in family, tradition, and an unwavering commitment to his community.

Throughout his distinguished career, Chief Derrick played a vital role in shaping our department and advancing public safety in Lake Geneva and the surrounding area. He was instrumental in the development and organization of our Emergency Medical Services system, helping bring essential pre-hospital care to our residents and visitors. His vision and leadership established a foundation that continues to save lives every day.

Beyond his many accomplishments, Dan was a mentor, a steady presence, and a trusted leader. He exemplified quiet strength, integrity, and genuine care for those he served alongside. His influence lives on through the generations of firefighters and EMS providers he guided, taught, and inspired.

Today, we mourn the loss of a respected leader, a dedicated public servant, and a dear friend. His legacy endures in the department he helped build and in the countless lives he touched throughout his years of service.

Funeral services are pending, and further information will be shared as it becomes available.

Please keep the Derrick family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Respectfully,

Chief Peters

As we near the end of EMS Week and ramp up for Memorial Day weekend we want to tell you a few things about our members by the numbers

38 - the number of members Lyons Township Fire Department has between Paid on Premise and Paid on Call

7 - the number of members strictly fire certified but all do hold CPR certification in the event of an emergency

31 - the number of members who hold EMS licenses (here comes some more breakdowns)
4 members hold EMR licenses
5 members hold EMT licenses
13 members hold AEMT licenses
9 members hold Paramedic licenses

16 - the number of members who also serve / work on other departments

Oldest active EMS license member......AEMT/Fire Chief Neal Lara (licensed since 1996)

Youngest active EMS license member......EMR/FF1 Anthony Amann (licensed since 2025)

What is the final number? Not the countless number of lives we have been a part of but the countless number of lives that have been there for us.

We could not be who we are without our Department and our Community.

Thank you to each member for EVERYTHING you do!

Tonight we trained in the classroom and then went on a field trip to the pool! With summer right around the corner, we thought it was a great time to train up on water rescue and emergencies.
Our swimmers were Captain Isaac Hannula, FF Andy Fincutter, Probationary member Matt Conlon, AEMT Beth Vrchota, EMT Jaya Elleson, and EMT Emily Conlon. On deck manning the hook, backboard, life ring, and rescue sling were FF/FR Anthony Amann, Asst Chief Dave Blink, FF Garret Reed, Asst Chief Ben Blink, FF/EMT Mike Swanson, FF Shane Kurth, and FR Dave Rex.

Special thanks to Country Estates for allowing us to use their pool for training.

We had some special guests last night! Members of the Aurora Healthcare EMS team were at our monthly meeting to present “Code Save Awards” to several of our members. A “Code Save Award” is given to recognize the teamwork, collaboration, and dedication to patient care that resulted in a life saved after a cardiac arrest. Our members responded to a call in February where they found an adult in cardiac arrest. CPR, defibrillation, and medications were skillfully administered by the crew and the patient regained a pulse and was transported to the hospital for further treatment. The patient had a very successful outcome and was eventually discharged home from the hospital neurologically intact!

Members that were awarded were Assistant Chief/FF Dave Blink, FF/EMR Colin O’Donoghue, AEMT Don Klaehn, FF/EMR Anthony Amann, Captain/EMR Dave Rex, Captain/FF/Paramedic Nick Johannesen, Assistant Chief/FF Ben Blink, and FF/EMT Mike Swanson.

We are so proud of our members and the phenomenal care they provide to our community!

Proud of our department and members for stepping up last night during the storms. Not only were we able to staff our rigs and respond to our calls but we were able to help a neighboring county in need. BLS Ambulance 292 responded to Janesville along with multiple other agencies in Walworth County.

Some times you need help some times you give help.

Some relative calm has returned to the City of Janesville after a night that can easily be described as Hellish.

Many suffered significant loss or have overwhelming damage and the community is hurting.

Our department responded to an onslaught of calls in a very short time, which eventually lead to pulling Disaster Response Box Alarm.

Crews battled a fully involved roof fire on a large farmhouse during the middle of a tornado warning with massive rain, lightning, and flooding trying to slow the way. While that was happening, other crews performed a rescue of a trapped train engineer after a train derailed down a washed out embankment. On top of those two large scale operations going on, more crews were out performing multiple water rescues of people trapped in quickly rising water. Medical calls, smoke investigation, and several more less serious calls also had to be handled, and crews performed to the best of their ability. We thank all the area fire departments who came to assist with the fire and disaster response. Their assistance wasn't only necessary, it was appreciated beyond words by our members.

Several drivers learned the importance lesson of why not to drive through standing water, which we can not stress enough! There are still areas with flooded roads and if you attempt to drive through them, you will likely not make and need to turn around.

Manhole covers were also lifted by powerful flood waters and are missing. Wading through seemingly shallow flood waters could quickly become life threatening if you step into one of these unseen open holes. Stay out of the water and please stay safe!

More details will come about last night's damage, but for now, please know we're here strong to continue supporting this community.
