The Rice County Public Works Department oversees road & bridge, Lyons-Rice County Airport, and the Rice County Landfill.

Rice County will be holding their annual HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE Event on Saturday MAY 9th. It will be held from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Rice County Landfill.
The landfill is located approximately 2 miles west of Lyons on Hwy. 56 (1380 US Hwy 56). The drive is located on the South side of the highway. Stop at the guard shack and you will be directed on where to go.
The gate will not be opened until 9:00 AM. Please DO NOT pull up to the gate prior to 9:00 AM because room is limited. We do not want vehicles to be sitting along the highway.

The Rice County landfill will be open Friday April 3rd (Good Friday) from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturday April 4th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The Rice County Landfill will be closed Thursday January 1st in observance of New Years Day and reopen Friday January 2nd at 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Have a great New Years Day and be safe!

The Rice County Landfill will be closed Thursday December 25th in observance of Christmas Day and reopen Friday December 26th at 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Have a very Merry Christmas!

The Rice County Landfill will be closed Thursday and Friday November 27th and 28th in observance of Thanksgiving Day and reopen Saturday November 29th at 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The Rice County Landfill will be closed Monday October 13th in observance of Columbus Day and reopen Tuesday October 14th at 8:00am.

08/28/2025

Road Sealing Begins
Starting Friday August 29th road sealing will begin from Alden going East to Highway 14.
Beginning Tuesday September 2nd from 8th Road going West into Raymond then going North on 4th Road to Highway 56.
Expect delays or take an alternative route. Schedule may change due to weather conditions.
The landfill will be closed Monday, September 1st in observance of Labor Day.

07/31/2025

Avenue Y at the Ellsworth County Line between the Bushton plants will be closed Monday August 4th so Midwest Energy can remove a transformer. The road will be barricaded so find a different route.

The Rice County Landfill will be closed Friday July 4th in observance of Independence Day and reopen Saturday July 5th at 9:00am.

06/18/2025

The Rice County Landfill will be closed Thursday June 19th in observance of Juneteenth Day and reopen Friday June 20th at 8:00am. They will be open Saturday the 21st normal hours 9-3.
