šŸŽ‰ A New Chapter for the Nelle Brown Library!

šŸ“šOn Thursday, August 20, members of our community gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for the renovation and expansion of the Nelle Brown Library, a branch of the Ohoopee Regional Library System.

This much-anticipated project will bring major improvements to our Lyons library, with construction expected to be completed and the facility fully operational after the first of the year.

The Greater VidaliaĀ® Chamber, City of Lyons, and Garbutt Construction were honored to host the ceremony and recognize the many individuals and organizations who have worked together to bring this project to fruition.

Guests heard remarks from Cameron Asbell, Director of the Ohoopee Regional Library System; Tommy Rollins, Toombs County Commissioner; Mayor Willis NeSmith; Jason Hall, Lyons City Manager; Tres Herin, Chairman of the Greater VidaliaĀ® Chamber Board; Howard Holman, Ohoopee Regional Library System Board Member; Michael Brent, Director of Operations for Garbutt Construction; and Dana Brown with the Greater VidaliaĀ® Chamber. Each shared warm sentiments and congratulations on this exciting investment in our community.

While renovations are underway, the City of Lyons and Lyons Main Street have partnered with the Nelle Brown Library to provide temporary space for library programming and services at the Lyons Welcome Center in downtown Lyons.

šŸ“ Be sure to follow the Nelle Brown Library page for its calendar of events, programming updates, and announcements throughout construction.

We are excited to watch this project take shape and look forward to welcoming our community back into a beautifully renovated Nelle Brown Library in the new year! šŸ“šā¤ļø

On August 12, several community leaders traveled to Warner Robins to attend the "Retail Ready Showcase," hosted by Georgia Power. It’s an educational and networking event designed to help communities better prepare for and attract new retail development. The event provided valuable insight from retailers, developers, and industry experts on market trends, site selection, recruitment strategies, and building strong partnerships.

Also in attendance Josh Beck, Vidalia City Manager; Tonya Parker, Downtown Economic Development Director; and Jennifer Smith, Economic Development Finance Administrator, from the City of Vidalia.

Together their participation reflects our continued commitment to collaboration, economic growth, and bringing new opportunities to Lyons, Vidalia and all of Toombs County.

The City of Lyons was pleased to welcome the Nelle Brown Memorial Library - Lyons and members of the City of Lyons Fire Department for a fun and interactive Story Time on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighter Bryson Sowell served as our guest reader. Afterward, Firefighter Sowell and Firefighter Mayes, along with Fire Chief Larry Monroe, gave our young guests an up-close look at the fire truck. They explained some of the equipment firefighters use, talked about emergency operations, and even gave the kids a chance to try on firefighting gear and hold the fire hose!

The August Lyons City Council meeting was filled with both appreciation and heartfelt emotion for two of our very own. We honored Lynn Rowland upon her retirement after 26 years of faithful service to the City of Lyons as City Clerk. While we celebrate this well-earned new chapter, her presence, leadership, and dedication to the City of Lyons will be deeply missed. We sincerely thank her for her lasting contributions and wish her many blessings in retirement.

We were also pleased to welcome special guests Angie Conner and Pam Helton from the Georgia Municipal Association. These ladies presented a proclamation to Lynn Rowland on behalf of the association, highlighting Lynn's professional accomplishments and her dedication to continued education throughout her career. In addition, Mayor Willis NeSmith presented a proclamation to Ms. Rowland, honoring her for her service.

We also proudly appointed Chaquandra Hudson as City Clerk. Having served as Assistant City Clerk, Chaquandra Hudson is well prepared to begin her new role as City Clerk for the City of Lyons. Her dedication, leadership, professionalism, knowledge, and wholehearted investment in our community make her exceptionally well suited for this important position. We congratulate her and look forward to her continued leadership and service.

We invite our community to join us in celebrating Ms. Rowland's remarkable service and congratulating Ms. Hudson on this exciting new chapter!
