Dengue Fever: Protect Yourself & Our Community

Dengue Fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness that is common in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, and affects the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. While most dengue cases reported from CONUS locations are travel related, local transmission of dengue can occur in a handful of states where the Aedes mosquito is found, including Florida.

Over the last 5 years, there was an average of 83 cases of locally acquired dengue in Florida each year. Hillsborough County saw an average of 1 – 6 locally acquired cases each year.

The most common symptom of Dengue Fever is fever with any of the following:
• Aches & Pains
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Rash
Here’s how to prevent Dengue and keep our communities safe:
🚫 Eliminate Breeding Grounds:
• Empty and refresh pet water dishes, birdbaths, and water troughs at least once per week.
• Drill drainage holes in the bottom of recycling, trash, and other outdoor storage containers.
• Remove unneeded items that collect water, such as old tires, plastic containers, and flowerpots.
• Store small boats and kayaks upside down.
🛡️ Minimize Mosquito Bites:
• Use EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or other approved ingredients.
• Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Remember, mosquitoes that spread Dengue bite during the day AND night!

Your actions make a significant difference! Let's work together to keep our community healthy and safe from Dengue.

Protecting Our Community: Understanding Cyclospora and How to Safeguard Your Health

There has been an uptick in Cyclospora cases across the nation, and it's important to know how to protect yourself and your family.

What is Cyclospora?
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can cause gastrointestinal illness.

This parasite is often found in contaminated water (f***s) or fresh produce like lettuce, basil, and raspberries. It can hide on fresh fruits, herbs, and leafy greens.

Is Your Salad Safe? Simple Steps to Protect Your Family:
Washing your produce is great, but standard kitchen sprays don't always kill this parasite. The main prevention strategy is to thoroughly wash, scrub, and/or cook all fresh fruits and vegetables before consumption. Here's how you can protect your family in 4 simple steps:

1. Wash Up First:
- Scrub your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds before touching food, and after handling or preparing raw fruits and vegetables.

2. Rinse and Scrub Thoroughly:
- Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking – even if labeled as pre-washed. Gently rub each leaf of lettuce, spinach, or basil under cold running tap water. Scrub firm fruits and vegetables (like melons and cucumbers) with a clean produce brush. Cut away any damaged or bruised areas.

3. Choose Whole Greens & Discard Outer Leaves:
- Instead of pre-bagged salad mixes, consider buying whole heads of lettuce. Peel away and throw out the outer two to three layers of outer leaves before washing the rest.

4. Cook When Possible:
- For the highest safety, cooking greens and other vegetables to a temperature of at least 158°F (70°C) is the absolute best way to make sure the parasite is completely gone.

Store Safely:
Refrigerate cut, peeled, or cooked fruits and vegetables as soon as possible (within two hours).

When to Call the Doctor:
Symptoms of Cyclospora infection can include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, bloating, increased gas, and heavy fatigue. If you or your family experience these symptoms, contact your local Military Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) or primary care provider.
Important Note: Standard stomach tests don't always look for this specific parasite, so make sure to tell your doctor if you recently ate raw produce!

More Information:
For more detailed information on Cyclospora, including a full list of symptoms, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website: https://www.cdc.gov/cyclosporiasis/.

Stay vigilant, stay healthy!

MacDill MTF Drive-Through Pharmacy Temporary Closure

The MacDill Drive-Thru Pharmacy is temporarily closing starting at 5:00 pm on July 21, 2026, until further notice, due to an air conditioning system issue. Because medications must be stored in temperature-controlled environments to remain safe, we are pausing operations for the drive-thru. To ensure you continue to receive safe, high-quality care, drive-thru pharmacy services have been consolidated at our Urgent Care Pharmacy located at 7101 King Fisher St 33621 (on the other side of the Drive-Thru Pharmacy) and the Main Clinic Pharmacy at this time.

Our facilities team is working to repair the AC system as quickly as possible, and we will post updates here as soon as the drive-thru is ready to safely reopen.

Due to this consolidation, you may experience longer-than-normal wait times at the Urgent Care Pharmacy and the Main Clinic Pharmacy. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience as our dedicated staff works as quickly and safely as possible to take care of our patients.
