Liberty Hall, Machiasport, Maine
Open House July 26th: 1pm - 4pm
Join us for the 2025 Open House at historic Liberty Hall in Machiasport. Built in 1873, Liberty Hall overlooks the site of the first naval victory of the American Revolution. It is a site of unparalleled historical importance, and the building is an outstanding example of Maine civic architecture, visibly symbolizing the rich historical and cultural legacy of Downeast Maine.
Saved from dereliction by a successful public-private partnership, the Friends of Liberty Hall in collaboration with the Town of Machiasport are seeking funds to complete the building’s restoration and return it to community use. Join us in this endeavor!
Liberty Hall will be open Saturday July 26th, 1 to 4 pm hosting a pop-up exhibition, Meeting Halls: Inspiring Maine’s Collective Futures by visual artists Michelle Hauser and Sally Eckhoff.
A selection of Hauser’s recent photographic portraits of Maine’s historic meeting halls will be on display. There will be a screening of Eckhoff’s hand drawn film The Innocent Bystander that animates Dan Hicks’ song of the same title. Guest speaker, Rose Marasco, will present her 1992 photographic project, Ritual and Community: The Maine Grange.
The program will conclude with the unwrapping of the recently rediscovered backdrops for some of Liberty Hall’s historic theater performances, and all will be accompanied by the musicmaking of famed Downeast musical star, Gene Nichols.
