The Northampton County Department of EMS began in 1986 when the County hired Carolyn Bono as the Coordinator of Emergency Medical Services. Bono provided EMS care utilizing a van stocked as an Advanced Life Support quick response vehicle, much like our SUVs of today. Carolyn became a true educator, leader, mentor and friend to ma

ny EMS providers. The next 18 years brought many changes in the provision of career staff to support the continuing increase in call volume and the declining availability of volunteer personnel. In 2004 our department found a home in Machipongo and returned to the concept of utilizing a quick response vehicle to provide Paramedic/Intermediate Advanced Life Support Care 24/7. We are also extremely proud to share the fact we have utilized EMScharts, a web based EMS charting system, since 2004, becoming the first in the State of Virginia to use this system. Today, we find our department growing at a rapid pace, mostly due to ever increasing call volume, answering an all time monthly record of 267 EMS calls in August 2011. Recently we added an ambulance to our compliment of vehicles and six (6) new full-time positions to staff it nights and weekends. This ambulance became necessary to assist in sustaining an acceptable county response time, to supplement the declining volunteer workforce and to generate revenue for needed personnel.
