McGulpin Point Lighthouse was completed in 1869, and on June 28, 1870, Christmas was declared a United States federal holiday. During this time, Christmas decorations in America featured natural elements like holly, pine cones, and evergreen boughs, alongside handmade adornments such as popcorn and cranberry strings, paper chains, ribbon and fabric, and extravagances like fruit and nuts.

While we do add contemporary decorations like electric strand lights (Edison’s bulb didn’t come until 1879), we feature these traditional elements so that visitors can imagine what it might’ve been like as a keeper celebrating the first American Christmas, during the reconstruction era, in a brand new lighthouse, 155 years ago.

We’ll be decorating all this week. Please join us for the Open House from 11-3 on Saturday, December 13! Admission is free and the gift shop will be open. Refreshments and cookies are available while supplies last! ❄️

Beautiful shot!

Gabe and Chris from the National Parks at Night team brought out shift lenses for everyone to try! These lenses are specifically designed for architecture and help with wide angle distortion. This was my first time using one! And it was really cool! While only an f/4 lens, when you use a tracker, you can still use it for the night sky. So this was my result.l with this newfangled lens. :)

Sony a74 + laowa 20mm shift lens. Pano blue hour and tracked sky.
