What a spectacular day of Love and Kindness! First, thank you so much to Rose LaPointe from the Church of the Straits Food Pantry for filling our Summer Snack Shack right up! The message went out to the school kids last week to pop into the library if they need some food this summer and I am delighted to be able to share so much with them! There are complete dinners for them to take home to make, easy lunches for stove and microwave, puddings, jello and applesauce! For snacks, we have an assortment of granola bars, fruit and grain bars, peanut butter and cheese crackers, and bagged chips. There are also several single-serve cereals and pop tarts. Thanks also to the individuals who have donated - spreadable cheese snacks and fruit juice chewies. ALSO, a huge thank you to Chubb's Bait Shop in Carp Lake!!! I called to see if I could order 20 dozen red wigglers for the Summer Reading worm farming kids' program, and not only did they agree to have them ready for me, but they got them donated free of charge from Michigan Bait! This is hometown community love. This is why we live here. Thank you. Seriously. You all rock.

We had a special supervisor at our Mural Repair Day festivities this afternoon! Momma Fox came by to check out what we were doing to her house, sniffing lids, drills and discarded coats, before scooching underneath to feed her kits. Five years ago we hung the mural, designed by Sheryl DeLong, to honor the five baby foxes born that year under the storage shed. It was quite a project! The community saved plastic lids for a year, the After School kids spending that time washing and sorting them into colors by the tub-full. It took months to construct, the kids learned to use a drill to attach tens of thousands of lids to four painted 4X8 foot panels. Since then, our mural has been featured in newspapers and magazines, visited by countless tourists, and sent through the Internet all around the world. After the last couple winters of extreme weather - ice storms, hail events, and this year over ten feet of snow - some of the plastic lids were damaged, shattered and lost. Today, library staff along with our friend Bill Barber spent the afternoon replacing lids in the most damaged areas. We are very much in need of orange lids so we can further repair the foxes. If our community can once again save every orange, rust, red and dark red lid they can find we would really appreciate it! Thanks again Bill!!!! We sure appreciate your help and ingenuity!

This week, the After School kids used a tub of my old metal bits - bells, rods, shells and lids - to create windchimes strung on driftwood. The sounds coming from the art room were... noisy! Happy noise. This was our last after school program for this school year, BUT Summer Reading starts June 24th - watch our page for details.
