While we ask the public to limit unnessecary travel along these streets post-milling, the streets will be available for through-access for those that live along them. There may be short periods in which the roads are inaccessible, largely when equipment is moving on them, and for a few hours post-paving for curing.

Much of Mackinaw City is open for business and offers respite from the harsh air quality conditions outside. Below is guidance from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) for residents and visitors to take advantage of while making the most of their time in our community:

Head Indoors: Stay inside and avoid strenuous physical outdoor activities like running or heavy yard work. If outside, move indoors immediately if you experience coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, or burning of eyes, nose, or throat.

Seal Your Home: Keep all windows and doors closed tightly to block fine particulate matter from entering.

Filter Indoor Air: Set central A/C units to recirculate and use a high-efficiency MERV-13 or higher filter.

Protect Vulnerable Residents: Keep young children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and anyone with heart or respiratory conditions like asthma inside. Don't be afraid to use a well-fitting N96 or KN85 mask when spending time outdoors.

Stay hydrated.

Do not burn candles, use vacuums without a HEPA filter, use gas stoves more than necessary, smoke, or spray aerosol products.

Protect Your Pets: Keep walks very short and leave pets indoors with plenty of fresh water.

Track Local Air Quality: Check real-time pollution updates for your neighborhood by visiting EGLE's MiAir Map or checking AirNow.

Smokey conditions are expected to linger into Saturday. Please exercise caution when outdoors in Mackinaw City and Michigan. Stay safe!
