😂👮‍♂️🎃 Mackinaw Police Department Safety Alert! 🚨🍬

It's that time of year again...Halloween! We're excited to see all the adorable (and slightly questionable) costumes out there tonight.

Just a few friendly reminders to keep the only thing truly scary about tonight the number of fun-size candy bars you eat:

Heads up, drivers! If you see a tiny ghost or a superhero with questionable depth perception darting across the street, please slow down! They're fueled by sugar and ambition, not traffic laws.

Costumes: Make sure your little monster can actually see out of their mask. Tripping over a curb because you're dressed as an overly-accurate Minion isn't cool. (Also, reflective tape is a good look, even if it clashes with your werewolf aesthetic).

The Candy Tax: Parents, we know the struggle is real. Taking a "small sample" for quality assurance is fine. Eating the entire contents of a pillowcase and then blaming the dog is not. (We've seen the evidence.)

Have a safe, fun, and spooktacular night, Mackinaw! We'll be out patrolling, fueled by coffee and the sheer terror of finding a rogue plastic spider.

Happy Halloween! 👻🚔

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety and education, we will be assisting with a Prom Crash Reenactment on Thursday, April 24 beginning at approximately 2:00 p.m. The section of road on 5th Street between East and Kerlin Will be closed from noon-3:30.
This event is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving, especially during prom season. According to recent statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), prom night sees a significant increase in alcohol-related accidents involving teenagers. One-third of alcohol-related teen traffic fatalities in 2019 occurred during prom season.

This reenactment is a realistic simulation of a motor vehicle crash involving students and emergency response teams. It is conducted in partnership with OSF, local law enforcement, local fire department, emergency medical services, and a special guest. The presentation is meant to be impactful and educational, helping students understand the real-life consequences of unsafe driving behaviors.

Please be aware that the reenactment will include simulated injuries, the use of sirens and emergency vehicles and crews, and other dramatic effects. While no students will be in any real danger, the content could be emotionally intense.

Community is always welcome to attend this as well, observation will take place in the vacant lot north of the school parking lot, just please avoid traffic on 5th St as much as possible during this operation.

April 13th-19th is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week! In Tazewell County, we are very fortunate to have a great team of Telecommunicators. They are the voice behind 9-1-1, taking calls for service, collecting information, and relaying that to first responders.

They also help keep first responders safe by relaying vital information to us, checking on us periodically, among a myriad of other tasks--and they do it all with grace.

Thank you for your service and dedication!

In April, we wear blue. You may have noticed our officers sporting blue badges. We wear them to raise awareness to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave.

Did you know?:

- About 1 in 36 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.

- ASD is reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.

- ASD is nearly 4 times more common among boys than among girls.

- About 1 in 6 (17%) children aged 3–17 years were diagnosed with a developmental disability, as reported by parents, during a study period of 2009–2017. These included autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, blindness, and cerebral palsy, among others
