⚠️ Air Quality Alert ⚠️

Air quality will continue to deteriorate across Michigan this afternoon and evening as wildfire smoke moves into the area.

By sunset, much of the state is expected to reach Very Unhealthy air quality levels (AQI 150+), with some areas potentially reaching Hazardous levels overnight if current forecasts hold.

These conditions are uncommon and can pose serious health risks for everyone, especially children, older adults, and anyone with heart or lung conditions.

With dangerous air quality combined with excessive heat today and tomorrow, the risk of heat-related illness and respiratory issues is significantly increased.

Take these conditions seriously and check on family members, neighbors, and anyone who may be more vulnerable.

UPDATE: The roadway is now open.

Westbound Hall Road is currently closed between Card Road and Heydenreich Road in Macomb Township for a crash. Please avoid the area.

☀️ HEAT SAFETY REMINDER ☀️

With temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and 100s this week, it’s important to take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones from heat-related illnesses.

-Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

-Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (typically 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

-Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

-Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, not even for a minute.

-Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.

Your local 5023 firefighters will be ready to respond, but the best emergency is the one that never happens. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and look out for one another during this stretch of dangerous heat.

At approximately 12:40 p.m. today, your local 5023 firefighters were dispatched to the 53000 block of Camden for a reported attached garage fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy black smoke and heavy flames showing from the garage door and side windows. All occupants had safely exited the home prior to our arrival, however, crews quickly conducted a primary search to confirm no one remained inside the residence.

The fire extended from the garage into the kitchen area of the home. Firefighters were able to bring the incident under control quickly, limiting further spread and minimizing damage to other areas of the residence.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and no one required medical attention at the scene.

We would like to thank Shelby Township Firefighters IAFF Local 1338 and Washington Township Professional Firefighters Local 3299 for their assistance on scene. We also would like to thank Ray Township Fire & Rescue for providing station coverage at Station 1 while our crews operated at the incident.

Great work by all crews involved.

🚒 TONS OF TRUCKS UPDATE 🚒

Due to circumstances beyond our control, Local 5023 members will not be participating in this year’s Tons of Trucks event. As a result, we will unfortunately not be holding our annual free bicycle raffle.

While our off-duty members will not be attending in an official capacity, Local 5023 will still be represented at the event by our on-duty crews. We encourage everyone attending to stop by, say hello, and support the event.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and look forward to continuing this tradition in the future.

🚒 Local 5023 Welcomes 3 New Full-Time Firefighters! 🚒

Please join us in welcoming Anthony Heppler, Christian Popp, and Justin Edwards as the newest additions to our full time firefighter staff at the Macomb Township Fire Department.

We look forward to working alongside each of you and getting you cleared as quickly as possible so that every shift can add another firefighter to daily staffing. Their official start date will be July 13, 2026.

We would also like to recognize that Anthony Heppler and Christian Popp previously served as part-time firefighters with the department. Congratulations on making the transition to full-time careers and continuing your commitment to serving our community.

With the addition of these three firefighters, and three more hires anticipated at the end of July, we continue making progress toward achieving the NFPA 1710 staffing standard of 15–17 full-time firefighters per shift.

Congratulations and welcome to the team.
