Burn Ban in Effect 03/22/2026

MACOMB, IL

McDonough County ESDA has issued an immediate county-wide Open Burn Ban due to the extremely dry conditions impacting Central Illinois. This ban encompasses all areas within McDonough County, including the Macomb City limits, and is intended to protect residents, property, and the community from the heightened risk of accidental fires. The burn ban will remain in effect until further notice and prohibits all open burning within city limits. This includes, but is not limited to, yard waste, bonfires, and recreational fires.

Exceptions:

The use of charcoal or gas grills for cooking is permitted.

Grills must be attended at all times while in use.

Persons who violate the burn ban will be subject to a fine.

The City of Macomb urges all residents to take this situation seriously and exercise extreme caution with any potential fire hazards during this period of unusually dry weather. Public safety is our top priority, and your cooperation is essential in reducing the risk of accidental fires.

629 W Orchard Structure Fire
MACOMB, IL

At 1:49 PM, Tuesday, March 10th, the Macomb Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 629 W Orchard St and unknown if anyone was inside. It was determined that one family member was home at the time and was able to exit through a window with the help of family members prior to our arrival. Fire Department personnel arrived on scene at 1:52 PM and observed heavy smoke coming from the structure. The on-duty crew located the fire in the living room and kitchen. The fire was extinguished and a primary search was completed. Several pets were reported to be inside the residence at the time of the fire. Firefighters were able to locate and rescue one dog, which was safely removed from the home; however, despite our efforts, the other pets could not be saved. Overhaul was conducted searching for any fire extension. The fire was brought under control at 2:02 PM. Six off-duty firefighters were called in to assist at the fire and provide coverage for any additional emergencies. Fire investigators processed the scene, and the scene was cleared at 4:55 PM.

No firefighters or civilians were injured.

Smoke alarms were present and sounding at the time of the fire.

The home sustained fire, smoke, and water damage and has an estimated loss of $40,500.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental due to the placement of combustibles to close to a heat source and remains under investigation at the time of this release.

Thank you to Macomb - McDonough County Communications Center, Macomb Illinois Police Department, City of Macomb Public Works, Lifeguard Ambulance Service of Illinois, WIU Office of Public Safety, and Ameren IL for their assistance with the fire.
