Thanks for a great program today, Dr. Robinett!

Jeremy Robinett, Ph.D., serves as Acting Administrator in Charge of Western Illinois University Athletics during Interim Director of Athletics Shelby Borchardt's maternity leave. In this role, Robinett provides executive leadership for the Department of Athletics, overseeing departmental operations and supporting the University's commitment to student-athlete success while maintaining continuity in strategic initiatives and daily operations.

A member of the Western Illinois University faculty since 2014, Robinett is Director of the School of Communication, Media, and Experience Industries and Professor of Recreation, Sport, and Tourism Administration. He has served as Western Illinois University's NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) since 2023 and currently represents the University on the NCAA Division I Academics and Eligibility Committee. As FAR, he serves as the primary liaison between the institution and the NCAA on matters related to academic integrity, student-athlete eligibility, rules compliance, and the overall educational well-being of student-athletes.

"Intercollegiate athletics play an important role in the educational mission of Western Illinois University," Robinett said. "I am honored to serve in this capacity and remain committed to supporting our student-athletes, coaches, and staff while ensuring that our department continues to move forward during this transition."

His work has focused on strengthening academic support for student-athletes, enhancing institutional compliance, fostering collaboration between Athletics and the broader University community, and advancing initiatives that promote student success. His collaborative leadership style and experience in academic administration, NCAA governance, and strategic planning have positioned him to provide leadership during this transitional period for Leatherneck Athletics.

Originally from southern Missouri, Robinett earned his bachelor's degree from Missouri State University and his master's and Ph.D. in Recreation, Sport and Tourism from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Julie Terstriep presented to the Club last Tuesday on the History of Camp Ellis, located in Fulton County.
The land for the military camp was acquired through eminent domain and totaled 75,000 acres. This acquisition displaced 140 families from their homes and farms. The site for Camp Ellis was selected because its terrain closely resembled conditions found in Europe, which made it suitable for training in construction and military movements. In addition, the location required access to a rail line, proximity to a substantial water supply, and a central location within a county. Construction of Camp Ellis began in September 1942 and was completed in April 1943. The camp included 2,200 structures, including barracks, a hospital, a prisoner-of-war camp, laboratories, and many other buildings.
Approximately 10,000 men were involved in the construction. The Army hospital at Camp Ellis was the largest in the world at the time. Overall, Camp Ellis was the largest military camp in Illinois, and six smaller satellite camps were also constructed throughout the state.
Julie also discussed the camp’s varied training programs, which included medical, engineering, and morale-building activities. Morale events featured appearances by national celebrities such as Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Joe Louis, and Sugar Ray Robinson. Although Camp Ellis operated in the area for only four years, it represented a major undertaking and left a substantial historical legacy.

Today's program was given by Dr. Jamie Johnson, who serves as the Director of the School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration at Western Illinois University. A nationally recognized educator, researcher, and emergency management expert, Dr. Johnson brings more than two decades of experience in higher education, public safety, homeland security, and health sciences.

Dr. Johnson earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and has dedicated his career to preparing the next generation of leaders in law enforcement, emergency management, and homeland security. His teaching and research focus on emergency management, public health preparedness, homeland security, behavioral theory, research methods, and community safety.

Dr. Johnson shared the tremendous impact of WIU LEJA in preparing students for successful careers and shaping the future of public safety. Recognized for its excellence nationally, LEJA is another example of WIU’s positive impact in our region and beyond.

This week's program was given by Joe Davis, Head Football Coach at Western Illinois University.

Also attending the meeting was Coach Austin Taylor, the new defensive line coach.

Joe was hired by WIU on December 10, 2023. He came to WIU from Eastern Illinois University where he was serving as the Offensive Coordinator.

Joe is a very experienced offensive coach and does an excellent job with quarterbacks having been a college quarterback himself. Joe is a very energetic, positive coach with infectious energy. He has done a tremendous job rebuilding the WIU roster with student-athletes who are truly good students and servant leaders performing many hours of community service in Macomb.

Joe is married to his wife, Whitney, who works for MDH and they are the proud parents of two daughters, Zoey and Jolie.

Also, during the meeting, Todd Lester presented a check for $9,968 to Jimmie Koller in support of the “Kicks for Kids” project, an initiative to provide shoes for children in the Macomb schools. Jimmie reported during the program’s inaugural year, shoes were provided to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. He noted that planning is already underway for next year, when the program is expected to serve children from pre-kindergarten through high school.

Yesterday, Jami Minter, co-owner of 309 Marketplace, was our guest speaker. She spoke about three different opportunities in one building. She started with their new collective retail store which opened in November 2025. She touched on the vision, business model, and outpouring of community support the store has received so far.

309 Marketplace is a store where the community can shop 26 local and regional vendors in one location. They are open 6 days/week and they offer everything from men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing to specialty food items, candles, gifts, handmade greeting cards, skincare, dog treats, and more. Jami thanked Katie Conlin, their store manager, for helping them bring their vision to life and running the day-to-day operations in a way that has surpassed their expectations.

She also talked about their event space, 309 Social, which is a great place to host showers, business meetings, birthday parties, graduation and retirement parties, photo shoots, and more!

The final opportunity in the building is a beautiful apartment made into an AirBNB. She opened it on Airbnb in May and is accepting bookings. It’s a beautiful modern apartment with exposed brick and natural lighting.

What a fantastic 5th Tuesday Social!

As we celebrated President Seth Minter’s final meeting as president, we also welcomed three new Rotarians into our Rotary Club and awarded four educational scholarships to deserving local students who will be attending WIU and SRC this fall.

It was an evening filled with fellowship, goodwill, and the opportunity to invest in the future of our community. Congratulations to our scholarship recipients, and welcome to our newest Rotarians!
