When I head into a birth it is always entered with an open mind. Each couple, family, and circumstance is different. Their plan and hopes are different. Their backgrounds and experiences are different. Their beliefs are different. Their approach is different.
And I absolutely love that. I feel like I get to be a fly on the wall and observe how each couple or family operates in labor. I find my place amid their space and energy and morph into the exact doula they need for that birth, at that time.
However, selfishly, while I’m providing a service, I’m also on the receiving end as well. Last night I walked with a family where extended and immediate family came together as the support. A family where their language, religious beliefs, and cultural habits are different than mine. It’s amazing. I love watching the small nuanced things that are routine to them and new to me. The language that flows so beautifully, the songs rich in rhythm and cadence, but serene and calming, scents of oils or foods that waft through the air: all different than those that I know.
It’s so enriching and such a privilege to be let into such a space, not only a birth space but a momentary part of the family experience.
It’s so cool, beautiful, humbling, and enriching. Doula work is seriously the best and is far more than seeing new life come into the world, though that’s definitely the biggest perk. 😉
