The City of Madera confirms the passing of former Mayor Santos Garcia, who passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 2, at Madera Community Hospital. We extend our condolences to the Garcia family and all who knew him.

Mayor Garcia served on the Madera City Council from 2018 to 2020 and as Mayor from 2020 to 2024. A Madera resident since 1971, he dedicated his life to serving the community he called home.

He spent 31 years as a United States Postal Service letter carrier and was a proud member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He also served as a labor and community organizer across the Central Valley, advocating for working families throughout the region.

As Mayor, he helped guide Madera through the COVID-19 pandemic, providing steady leadership during a challenging time. He remained a consistent voice for working families and underserved residents, and was committed to making Madera a better place for all.

City Manager Arnoldo Rodriguez reflected on Garcia's legacy: "Mayor Garcia never forgot where he came from or who he was fighting for. He came up through the union, and brought that perspective with him into office. He pushed for a Madera that worked for everyday people, and that's how he'll be remembered as someone who genuinely gave everything he had to this community."
