“Doc” Walker’s Texaco station opened at the corner of Sixth and John R in the mid-1920s. The station was replaced by a used car lot in the late 1950s. From our archives, we believe that Sixth was located south of Eleven Mile Road, somewhere in the vicinity of the old Township/City Hall at 26305 John R. Does anyone remember a street named Sixth in Madison Heights, where it was located, and whether it was later renamed?

Photo from 1921 showing students of Lamphere School, District No. 4, in what was then Royal Oak Township. The Lamphere School District was organized on June 13, 1844, and named for Archibald Lamphere, a pioneering farmer whose children attended the school.

“Attention Kmart shoppers!” Sears Holdings announced it was closing the Super Kmart store at the corner of Twelve Mile Road and John R in the fall of 2014. This article is from the Madison-Park News, October 8, 2014. Kmart was a fixture in the community for many decades after opening in the early 1980s in the space formerly occupied by Korvettes (now BJ’s). Who remembers the “Blue Light Specials” at Kmart and employees rolling around the cart with the blue light attached back in the day?

Thirty-one names are inscribed on the monuments that stand silently by the flagpole through every season in front of City Hall. They are a solemn testament to the sons of Madison Heights who left home to serve our nation but never returned. On this Memorial Day, the Madison Heights Historical Commission honors our thirty-one fallen local heroes and the more than one million brave men and women who have given their lives defending our freedom. May we pause for a moment today during our holiday celebrations and family gatherings to honor their memories – and never forget the sacrifice they made for community and country.

We’ve posted this photo before, but thought it was appropriate to share it again this Memorial Day weekend. Shown are Madison Heights Mayor Edward Swanson and Madison Heights Gold Star Mother Jean Linville at a Memorial Day ceremony in 2012. Jean’s son, Army Pfc. Michael T. Linville, 20, was killed in action on September 20, 1970, in Vietnam. He was one of 16 men from Madison Heights who perished while serving during the Vietnam War. Jean wrote the following poem about Michael’s death and graciously shared it with the community over the years, and we’d like to share it again here:

DEATH OF A SOLDIER

In midst of war, a young man stood under the bright blue sky.
Death angel flew overhead but failed to pass him by.

He swept him up without a thought of loved ones left behind.
And bore him to his heavenly home until the end of time.

He wasn’t ready for death that day
But the death angel took him anyway.

His loved ones cried and loved ones moaned
As he was bore to his heavenly home.

But time will come when we will meet
The one we love at Jesus’ feet

We realize this photo from the original Madison Heights Heritage Book (1965) is not the best quality, but we found it too interesting not to share. It shows William McCaney’s threshing machine, representative of the farming that was prevalent in rural Royal Oak Township in the early 1900s. Pictured here are Dolph Granger, Skip Granger, Orvie Allen, Bill McCaney, and his father, Jim McCaney. Threshing machines were used to separate grain from the stalks and husks after harvesting.
