Many parents ask about books that will help them understand their adolescent child. Queen Bees & Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman has been around for a number of years. Her book talks about how to help your daughter survive cliques, gossip, boyfriends, and other realities of adolescence. Rosalind Wiseman has come out with a book helping our boys cope with school yard power, locker-room tests, girlfriends, and the new rules of the boy world - Masterminds & Wingmen. I am really enjoying reading Masterminds & Wingmen! Thought I'd share!

Ir's Su***de Prevention month... Here are some of the signs to look for if you are worried about a friend or loved one.

As a school counselor, I encourage students to come and speak to me, parents or a trusted adult about themselves or others.

More of my favorite organizing items!. If your child insists a binder is not the way to go, consider this awesome Five Star hybrid notebook binder - at Target, ONLY this time of year (one for each class)... It lasts all year & can be used for years to come. The cover is plastic & folds over to lie flat like a notebook, while organizing, with its built-in paper & dividers - plus, you can add more paper as needed.
I also like the idea of having a separate homework/turn-in folder that a student takes to each class, making it easy to find the completed homework & turn in.

Here are some of my back-to-school favorites for organizing your middle school child... This binder by Case It (at Staples) is amazing, since it has 3-rings with tab enclosures & a built-in expandable file. I recommend a 3-hole punched plastic folder (different colors for each class). These last all year & fit nicely into this binder - also at Staples. I attached an option for shelving in a locker- it hangs the length of the locker & is very durable. These are just options to consider. Remember to label each folder with your child's name, subject & possibly a homework/turn-in side of the folder and a classwork side.

It's important to me to get to know our students on a personal level. I call all
6th graders down on their birthday... We chat about their plans for the day, while they receive a birthday card & treat & fill out a personal survey for me!☺. It's London's birthday today!

Operation Beautiful... All kids need to see & hear positive affirmations!☺. I put positive sayings, mantras & ideas on notes for my students, in the bathrooms... Amazing responses from students.
