Congratulations !

Our history and traditions are an important and necessary function of U.S. Coast Guard culture, and “The Ancients” are the living embodiment of our history and traditions. The Ancients are the senior-most officer and enlisted cuttermen, aviators, and marine inspectors. Today, I was honored to attend the change of watch ceremony to name our newest Silver Ancient Mariner, DCCM Russell Cox, the senior-most enlisted cutterman. BMCM Matthew Coppola will relinquish the tittle to DCCM Cox after 30 years of faithful service to our Nation.

BMCM Coppola, thank you for your service and unwavering commitment to the lore of the sea and traditions of our fleet. Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate.

DCCM Cox, you have assumed an important and prestigious title as a protector of our seagoing traditions and guardian of our time-honored reputation, a title I know you will execute with effectiveness and poise.

Semper Paratus.

Congratulations to OS2 Emily Muhlenbeck and HS1 John Harmeling on successfully completing Recruiter School yesterday! OS2 is RO Detroit's Reserve recruiter and HS1 will be reporting to us later this month replacing MK2 Thompson as he transfers. Every Coast Guard recruiter is required to attend the 3 week course at Training Center Cape May where they learn interview and presentation techniques, proper caretaking of applicants, paperwork management, in depth detail of every recruiting program we have to offer, and much more. We look forward to your safe return/arrival to the office and contributing to RO Detroit's successful recruiting tradition.

Excellent post by one of our co-located small boat stations. Thank you U.S. Coast Guard Station Marblehead, OH for supporting our "Everyone is a Recruiter" program by promoting the Coast Guard Reserve!

Did you know Station Marblehead has 12 Reserve members? Coast Guard Reserves augment and back-fill our active duty crews during surge operations, and in other times of need. For example, in 2017, we sent two active duty boat crews to Texas in response to Hurricane Harvey. To backfill the billets in Marblehead, we utilized our reserve members. Every summer, Station Marblehead brings 4 reserves onboard active duty orders from Memorial Day through Labor Day to augment our active duty crews. These 4 members fill duty coxswain, engineer, crewman, and boarding team member billets. Without our reserve members, we would not be able to remain a #Ready, #Relevant, and #Responsive Coast Guard. Here are some pictures of our reserves maintaining their qualifications on the 29’ RB-S II this past weekend. Usually, Coast Guard Reservists serve one weekend a month, and 2 weeks in the summer. Are you interested in joining the Coast Guard Reserves? If so, reach out to your nearest recruiter at GoCoastGuard.com

Foundation for Coast Guard History

Iceberg ahead!

April 14, 1912 -- At around 11:40 p.m., RMS Titanic collided with an iceberg off Newfoundland while sailing on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. She sank a little over two hours later. There were 1,517 lost including 103 women and 53 children out of total passenger and crew of 2,207. Subsequently, certification and life saving devices were improved and an International Ice Patrol was created to patrol the sea lanes off Newfoundland and Greenland during the winter months. The Revenue Cutter Service took over the operation of the Patrol the following year.

This week, RO Detroit had a busy but enjoyable schedule which included attending the two day Great Lakes Leadership, Diversity and Inclusion Symposium; judging a JROTC competition in Genesee County; processing applicants for qualification through MEPS; keeping up with administrative work; and hosting our Commanding Officer, Captain Walsh as well as District 9 Senior Reserve Officer, Captain Decker, District 9 Reserve Command Master Chief, Master Chief Shoemaker, and Sector Detroit Command Senior Chief, Senior Chief Clair to discuss Reserve recruiting initiatives throughout our area. During Captain Walsh's visit, he presented Chief Romboldi and the crew of RO Detroit with the Coast Guard Central Region Recruiting Office Of The Year Award for 2018. The competition was close as there are many exceptional recruiting offices throughout the region that do an outstanding job. The Central Region includes all of the recruiting offices from the Great Lakes and south through Texas. Thank you Captain Walsh for making the trip from Washington, D.C. to present this award in person and we look forward to continuing our successful recruiting practices throughout 2019 and beyond.
