It is with much sadness we announce the passing of our dear Broadway friend, James Russell Cook. We called him “Rusty”. Living on Broadway, Elm, Vine, Poplar, 4th, 5th or 6th Streets meant family and friends. Whether we were dancing in the old school on Saturday night, going tothe skating rink on Monday night, or shooting hoops in the school yard our friendships were important. Rusty was smooth, good looking, polite and always pleasant. He was born with “swag”. In high school, Rusty played Basketball for Shawe. He entered the United States Air Force in 1965. He retired as Master Sergeant in 1985 after 20 years of service in the United States Air Force. He was the loving father to a son, James Anthony, and a daughter, Selisa. He married Jennifer Watson on May 26, 1986 at Hanover Presbyterian Church in Hanover. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Mr. Charlie O’Banion of Madison, Indiana was a Tuskegee airman! A big than you to our TUSKEGEE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE, Alabama. More than 80 years ago, African Americans were barred from flying in the U.S. military. But in 1941, under pressure from civil rights organizations and members of the Black press, the Army Air Corps launched a “Tuskegee Aviation Experience” to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft during World War II. The program, which took place at the distinguished Tuskegee Institute, trained more than 1,000 Black pilots, navigators, bombardiers, instructors and other associated personnel.

These men flew more than 1,500 missions during the war and won more than 850 medals, defying prevailing stereotypes and opening African Americans to more opportunities in the military. Although they were not trained as pilots, Black women also participated in the program and became mechanics, technicians, control tower operators and other specialized staff. The national historic site contains a restored hanger and a museum, which includes a replica of a red-tail plane the airmen were known for piloting.
His banner will be displayed this year thanks to Allen Manning and the Jefferson County Veterans Council, the Jefferson County Veterans Service Office, City of Madison, Visit Madison, Inc., Madison Main Street Program & other generous donors. Please think about sponsorships for upcoming years.

I truly value friendships and do not take any for granted. Family may be the cake, but friends are the icing—the part that makes life truly sweet. Unlike the family you’re born into, friends are the ones you choose, the ones who share in your secrets, pick you up when life gets tough, and laugh with you at 2 AM over inside jokes.
Friends are the team you build yourself, the ones who help you move (furniture, not bodies!), who cheer your successes, and who make the everyday extraordinary. They’re the people who turn ordinary moments into epic stories, proving that bonds can be as strong as family—without the DNA.
Today I was pleased to be in the middle of a conversation between Chris Guess and Allen Watson, two friends since birth. The picture of the two of them at when they worked at the library moving items into the newly renovated building sparked this conversation. They were reminiscing about working and saving their money to buy themselves motorcycles. Their goal was to ride with the older Ronnie Whittaker and Al’s older brother, Bill. Once purchased the group rode through Clifty, Versailles State Park, up Telegraph Hill and beyond checking in regularly with Mrs. Lucy. They lived together, worked together, went to to school together, ran track together and have remained friends over the years.
So value those friendships outside of family. They’re the ones who show up, make life brighter, and remind you that the best connections are the ones you choose.
Friends are the family we choose, and they enrich our lives in countless ways💛 Good friends are like stars.

What an asset to the city of Madison and beyond! Congratulations Dwight Inskeep! We are so proud ofyou! Madison High School recognized Dwight for 52 years of coaching this week. His niece is qited as saying “The man could write a book on how to handle teenage girls! He is not only my Uncle, he was my coach too. He taught me that practice makes precision, and to never give up. I am thankful for his wisdom, patience, and dedication. So many generations of girls are very lucky to have Dwight in their village.” He is an active member of our community and he and Windy regularly volunteer at Madison’s Juneteenth celebrations! We are grateful for such wonderful role models and their support!

Our sincere condolences to Sister Dorothy Gibson and her family on the passing of her sister .
We are saddened by the death of Eva Stubbons Hearn, 92, who was called to her heavenly home on Sunday, December 28, 2025. A proud native of New Albany, Indiana, she was born at home on Thursday, May 11, 1933, to the late Adolph and Lora (Mophens) Stubbins. Eva attended the historic Division Street Elementary School and was a member of the last graduating class of Scribner High School (the African American high school in New Albany, Indiana) in 1951. After graduation, she began working as an elevator operator for the New Albany White House Department Store. Ultimately, she retired from the Wellcor Incorporated in New Albany, Indiana. On January 31, 1959, she was united in holy matrimony to the late William B. "Spike" Hearn. Eva was a member of Howard Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where she was baptized and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Eva was a dedicated child, sister, niece, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, and friend. She truly loved everyone. Warmly known as "Ma" by her grandchildren, she always took the time to visit with aging family members, checking in on them, and seeing how she could help. You would rarely see her around town without her devoted husband by her side, unless she was at work or going to bingo. A supportive mother, she attended her children's sporting events and spent quality time playing in the yard with them as they grew up. She cherished her time with her grandchildren, viewing these moments as blessings from God. Eva made the holidays special for her family and enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends. She had a gift for giving her time and financial support whenever she could. Eva was an avid sports fan, enjoying basketball and football, especially following NAHS, IU, WKU, Ball State and the UK/UofL rivalry. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May your cherished memories bring you peace and comfort.

Eva was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Hearn; her infant twin sons, William Jr., and Wilbur; father, Adolph Milton Stubbins; mother, Lora Mae Stubbins; three infant brothers, Everett, James and Harvey; her sisters, Mary Stubbins, Addison Duncan, and Audrey Thomas; and her brothers, Edward, Milton, Robert, Charles, Norman, Walter, Thornton, and Delmar Stubbins.

She is survived by her son, Charles Michael Sparks; her daughter, Victoria (Daniel, preceded in death) Haley; her son, William "Bill" Hearn III (Beverly); her son, Robert "Bob" Hearn (Melissa); her grandchildren, Nicholas Daniel Haley, William "Quartus" Hearn IV, Sasha Hearn, Elijah Hearn, and Jasmine Hearn; her sisters, Dorothy Gibson, Cleada Lively, and Estella Stubbins; her brothers, Julius (Chalonda) Stubbins and Gary Stubbins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. The family extends special thanks to their dear friend Margaret Terrell, who was Eva's caregiver after her hospitalization for pneumonia.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Howard Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 1715 E Market St, New Albany, IN 47150, with a service to follow at 12:00 p.m.

In America, WE DON'T DO KINGS. October 18th - one of the largest days of protest in US history included the daily act of organizing in every congressional district in our country where Indivisibles continue standing up against authoritarianism. Many of Madison's community members lost family members who took a sacred oath to fight for our Democracy. That fight continues everyday. Please join us tomorrow!
