As National Historic Marker Weekend comes to a close, we are reflecting with gratitude and pride on all that was accomplished right here in Morgan County!

✨ 4 newspaper articles helped spread the word
✨ 62 historic markers cleaned across the county
✨ Over 100 volunteers joined the effort

Our volunteers included students from Morgan County schools, members of local businesses, societies, and organizations, veterans, and private citizens who share a passion for keeping our history alive.

What an incredible example of a community coming together to preserve the stories that shaped us. We are so proud of what we’ve accomplished—and now we’re ready to celebrate! Thank you, Morgan County!

As always, huge thank you to those who sponsored this effort: Fairfield Inn, and Morgan County Archives

It’s officially National Historic Marker Day, and we’re ending this incredible journey on the very best note!

Today, we’re cleaning the final Morgan County Historical Marker alongside our wonderful partners from It feels especially fitting to wrap up with the help of the amazing Sarah Wibell, who joined us for this last sign just ahead of MadFest—also marking her final day in her role.

Sarah, your enthusiasm and support has been an asset to all who know you! Please join us in wishing her all the best in her next chapter—we will truly miss her!

This marker-cleaning initiative has been such a meaningful and successful effort, made possible by an incredible community of sponsors, team leaders, and volunteers. Because of you, Morgan County’s history is shining a little brighter.

We look forward to celebrating this achievement with all of you on May 3rd as we say thank you for being such an integral part of this mission.

There’s nothing quite like seeing history come to life through the eyes of a fourth grader—and this week, our historic homes in Madison were full of curiosity, questions, and excitement during the annual Civil War field trips!

Over two very busy (and very fun!) days, local students stepped back in time as they toured our three historic homes, learning what life was like during one of the most pivotal chapters in our nation’s story. From thoughtful questions to wide-eyed wonder, these students reminded us exactly why preserving and sharing history matters.

Events like this don’t happen without an incredible team behind the scenes. A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful docents, Lana and Diane, and a very special shoutout to Ann—who gave her time both days without hesitation. Ann, you are pure magic, and we are so grateful for you! Heather, we can’t forget you! Thank you for standing out by the courthouse both mornings and talking to the students about the history there!

We also have to thank Jim for being such a great sport and suiting up as a Union soldier to stand guard at Heritage Hall—you helped bring an extra layer of authenticity (and fun!) to the experience.

And what a treat it was to have Bob from join us bright and early both days—going above and beyond to quite literally set up camp! His Confederate and Union encampment display was an unforgettable addition that truly brought the era to life for the students.

We are so lucky to live in a town rich with history—but it’s the people who make Madison so special. Thank you to everyone who helped make these two days such a meaningful experience for the next generation of history lovers!
