Madison County Victim Witness Assistance Program

Madison County Victim Witness Assistance Program Victims and witnesses have a very important role in the prosecution of cases. This process can be frightening and frustrating. DRESS APPROPRIATELY.

The Victim/Witness Assistance Program operated by and located in the Madison County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, helps ensure that crime victims and witnesses receive fair and compassionate treatment while participating in the Criminal Justice System. Many victims and witnesses are not familiar with the Criminal Justice System. We are here to make this experience easier for you and to support

you through the entire process. Call the Victim/Witness Program if:

You have a question about your role as a witness. You would like an explanation of court procedures or a tour of the courtroom before you testify. You would like someone to es**rt you to court. You want assistance in filing for compensation under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund. You need a referral to community service agencies for counseling, housing or other assistance. You are not receiving restitution payments that were ordered by the court. You have received crime related threats or harassment. Your personal property is being held as evidence, and you want to know if you can recover it. You need information regarding the status of your case. Tips on Testifying

TELL THE TRUTH. If called to testify, listen carefully to the questions asked. Make sure you understand each question and give an accurate answer to the best of your ability. If you do not know the answer, be sure to say so. The way you present yourself is a reflection on you. It is to your advantage to dress neatly, and conduct yourself in a courteous manner. SPEAK LOUDLY AND CLEARLY. It is the duty of the attorney to make a question answerable. If you did not hear the question or understand it, ask the attorney to repeat it. Stop speaking immediately if an objection is made by one of the attorneys. BE COURTEOUS AND KEEP CALM. Try to remain calm and do not lose your temper. Being polite makes a good impression. Do not argue with the attorneys or allow yourself to become upset during questioning. DO NOT GUESS OR SPECULATE. Be yourself and answer in your own words. Don't pause or try and figure out if your answer will hurt or help the case. BE PREPARED TO WAIT. The court process can be long and unpredictable. However, your role is a very important one. Your cooperation and patience is necessary. NEVER: Smoke, chew gum, eat or drink anything while in the courtroom. Also, do not have alcoholic beverages the day you are to come to court. NO CELL PHONES

This week, April 12-18, we recognize and celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

Our dispatchers are often the first voice people hear during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. They remain calm under pressure, gather critical information, coordinate responses, and provide reassurance when it is needed most.

They are the unseen link between the public and first responders, working behind the scenes 24 hours a day to help keep our community safe. Their professionalism, dedication, and ability to manage emergencies make a difference every single day.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all of our dispatchers for the important work they do and for their continued service to our community.

JURY DUTY PHONE SCAM ALERT

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office wants to alert you to a jury duty phone scam that is currently circulating in our area.

Residents have reported receiving fraudulent calls claiming to be from the court or law enforcement, stating that you’ve failed to appear for jury duty and must pay a fine immediately.

Scammers may use fake phone numbers, threatening language, and may even provide instructions to pay using gift cards, prepaid cards, or cryptocurrency.

This is NOT how legitimate jury duty notices or fines are handled.

REMEMBER:

• The court will NEVER demand immediate payment over the phone.
• Legitimate jury duty summonses come through the mail from the court.
• Law enforcement will never call to demand payment or threaten arrest for alleged jury duty issues.

If you receive one of these calls:

-Do not provide personal information.
- Do not make any payments.
-Hang up immediately.

Congratulations!! 👏🎉
