Jefferson County’s original application requesting transfer, dated May 19, 1995, under a benefit of conveyance specified that Krueger Lake and the immediate surrounding area would be managed as a recreation area. Section 6 (d) 1 of the Quitclaim Deed of Conveyance accepted by the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners on October 14, 1999, states that “The property shall be used and maintained exclusively for public park and recreation purposes in perpetuity as set forth in the program of utilization…”
In order to establish goals and target future improvements for Krueger Lake and other potential areas, the Jefferson County Park Board was authorized by the Jefferson County Council at the request of the commissioners. Five residents were appointed. Krueger Lake remains a popular day-use recreation area. Fishing is the most popular daily activity, with a healthy and diverse population of fish: large-mouthed bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Picnicking and mushrooming are also popular activities. The Western Wooded Parcel is a 400-acre flat wood forest located in the southwest corner of the former Jefferson Proving Ground (JPG), an Army facility that was closed on 1995. The Quitclaim Deed of Conveyance accepted by the Jefferson County Commissioners on December 30, 2004, states that “The property shall be used and maintained exclusively for public park and recreation purposes in perpetuity as set forth in the program of utilization.”
The Western Wooded Parcel is a large forested area currently accessible to the public for passive outdoor recreation activities. Although there is no trail system, visitors do hike into the area for birding, mushrooming, photography, and berry picking.

📋 Jefferson County Parks — Five-Year Master Plan Survey Open!

Your input shapes the future of our parks. Beginning today, Jefferson County residents are invited to take a brief, anonymous survey to help guide how we maintain, develop, and program our parks over the next five years.

The survey takes about 10 minutes and asks about:
• How often you use county parks
• Which facilities and amenities matter most to you
• What programs you'd like to see
• Where the county should focus its investment

"We're asking every resident to take a few minutes with the survey or stop by one of our public sessions. The more we hear, the better this plan will be." — Richard Hill, President, Jefferson County Parks Board

Yesterday The Nature Conservancy (TNC) conducted a controlled burn on the southern portion of the Western Wooded Parcel. Looks like all went well. Under the original transfer of property agreement TNC manages this area for us to promote a sustainable forest.
