Citywide Brush Collection Following Storms - For Immediate ReleaseJune 12, 2026

If you have tree debris from this week's storms, please stack it on the terrace for collection. Streets & Urban Forestry crews will do a citywide sweep over the next couple of weeks in addition to the scheduled brush collection. Thank you for your patience as we continue to respond to damaged street trees and storm debris after multiple rounds of severe weather. Streets & Urban Forestry crews received nearly 300 reports of tree branches blocking roadways and sidewalks. Nearly all of this work has been completed. There is still some pruning and clearing of damaged branches to do but crews are actively addressing these needs over the next few days. Report Damage to Street Trees The Parks Division is managing cleanup of tree damage in City parks. Please let us know if there are any problems in your neighborhood park. Report Damage to Park Trees Again, thank you for your patience and for alerting the City of Madison to storm damage so we can efficiently carry out this cleanup.

If you have tree debris from this week's storms, please stack it on the terrace for collection.

Watch for Problems: Stickers, Rubber Bands, and Twist Ties Do Not Compost Check your scraps for stickers, rubber bands, twist ties, and other items that do not compost and remove them before you place your scraps into the orange carts. The 2026 Spring Yard Waste Collection is Over, Curbside Set-Out Dates Return in the Fall - Do not set out yard waste and leaves for curbside collection again this spring. There is no curbside pickup of yard waste and leaves during the summer months. The spring yard waste set-out dates for 2026 have passed and every neighborhood has received their scheduled spring collections at this time. Curbside pickup of leaves and yard waste will return in the fall. What should you do with yard waste now? Take your yard waste to a Streets Division drop-off site. Residents may also want to try home composting or mulching grass clippings, and similar yard waste, into their lawn. Do not place yard waste into the trash or recycling carts. Yard waste, like grass clippings, leaves, and similar plant debris, have been banned from Wisconsin landfills for over 30 years. Trash carts found with yard waste material in them will not be emptied. Do not place yard waste in recycling carts, either. Yard waste in mixed with recyclables will damage sorting equipment. Recycling carts found with yard waste in them will not be collected. Drop-off Site Information There are three drop-off sites available year-round for Madison residents. The sites are located at 4602 Sycamore Avenue, 402 South Point Road, and 1504 Quann-OIin Parkway. Before loading your vehicle, check the drop-off site webpage so you know the site hours and other information.About the Quann-Olin Entrance Your phone will not give you correct directions for the 1504 Quann-Olin Parkway drop-off site entrance. The site is too new and the mapping tools on your phone have not caught up to the new location. There are signs on Quann-Olin Parkway to guide you into drop-off site. Please look for them. We also have a map on our website to help you get into this location. What is yard waste? Yard waste is weeds, leaves, grass clippings, and other plant debris that you rake or pull from your lawns or gardens. Yard waste is hauled to a processor where it is composted. Woody limbs and branches you cut from trees, shrubs, and bushes is brush, not yard waste. Brush collection continues through the summer months. More information about brush collection can be found at When will I have more curbside set out chances again? Curbside yard waste collection will return in the fall. The dates when you should put yard waste at the curb for pickup this fall will be published to the yard waste website later this year. The dates are usually available sometime after the August student move out or by early September. Why does yard waste pickup end in the spring? The crews collecting yard waste need to move onto other duties that the Streets Division performs. For example, crews performing yard waste pickup in the spring need to switch to road repair projects as the weather warms up for the summer. Additional Information Additional information about yard waste collection, including the difference between yard waste and brush, can be found on the Streets Division's website.

Do not set out yard waste and leaves for curbside collection again this spring. There is no curbside pickup of yard waste and leaves during the summer months.

Your Final Spring Yardwaste Collection Begins Soon; Get Your Final Spring Set-out Date Online - Every neighborhood has just one more spring yard waste set out date. This will be the final spring yard waste collection by the Streets Division for 2026. Curbside collection will return in the fall. When you should put out your yard waste for your final spring pickup depends on where you live. Get your set-out date from our yard waste website. Go to the Yardwaste Website What do we mean by "yard waste"? Yard waste is leaves, weeds, grass clippings, and other plant material you rake or pull from your lawns or gardens. Not Yard Waste: Branches, limbs, and sticks cut from your trees, shrubs, and bushes is brush, not yard waste. Brush has a different pickup schedule. How do you set out yard waste for collection? Place the leaves and yard waste at the street edge or on the terrace. Do not place yard waste into the street. Please keep the material at least four feet from obstructions where possible. Obstructions like street signs, utility poles, mailboxes, trees, and parked cars interfere with collection. If you choose to bag your yard waste, please choose compostable paper leaf and lawn bags. Keep them open so crews can see what is inside. If you choose to use other bags, that is acceptable. You will also need to keep them open. Keep in mind crews may need to rip or slice open plastic bags to get your yard waste out. They will need to leave the split bags behind at the curb. Do not mix yard waste piles and brush piles together. Crews will not collect mixed up piles. Brush is a separate collection. What should you do with yard waste when collection is over? Take yard waste to one of the three Streets Division drop-off sites. Check the drop-off site website to learn their hours and locations before loading your vehicle. Also, consider composting your leaves and yard waste at home. Yard waste and leaves are banned from trash and recycling carts. Do not place your yard waste material into the carts. Why does yard waste collection end in the spring? The crews collecting yard waste need to move onto other duties during the summer months, like road repair. Collection Returns in the Fall Curbside pickup for leaves and yard waste will return in the fall. Your fall set out dates will be published to the yard waste website later this year. Fall set-out dates are typically finalized and published sometime after the August student move out. You can expect them to be available on the website likely in late August or early September. Additional Information For additional information regarding yard waste collection, or other services provided by the Streets and Urban Forestry Division, please visit our website or contact us.
