Congratulations!

The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently awarded a $20,000 South Dakota Fund grant to Brookings Area United Way (BAUW). Funding will assist with the completion of the first cycle of Communities That Care. Founded in 1955 as the Brookings United Charities Fund, BAUW still works to meet the original purpose of funding charitable, educational, civic, and philanthropic causes, while working to fulfil its current mission of uniting people, sharing resources, inspire hope, and enriching lives in Brookings County.

200,000+ meals. That's not just a number — that's 200,000 moments of connection, nourishment, and care delivered across South Dakota this year. 🍽️
More than 70,000 of those were frozen meals delivered to seniors in rural communities, where access to consistent, nutritious food can be one of the biggest challenges of aging in place.
None of this happens without our incredible volunteers, drivers, kitchen staff, and community partners who show up — often in subzero temperatures and on long country roads — to make sure no neighbor goes without.
To every senior who opens the door with a smile: thank you for letting us be part of your day.
To every volunteer: you are the program.
To our partners and supporters: this impact belongs to you, too.
The impact is real. And it's only possible together. 💙

Across rural South Dakota, a dependable meal can mean far more than food on a plate. It can help seniors remain healthier, safer, and more independent in their own homes and communities.

At ICAP, we know access matters. As I travel this week to visit communities and meet with partners, I am looking forward to conversations about how we can continue working together to strengthen meal access for seniors across South Dakota.

If you would like to learn more, support this work, or explore a local partnership, please review the contact information and frozen meal flyer included with this post.

We’re proud to share that Betsy Draper has been named the Sioux Empire April 2026 Volunteer of the Month.

Betsy was nominated by Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership for her outstanding service as a VITA Tax Preparer. Over the past 3 years, she has volunteered weekly during tax season, helping provide hundreds of households with free tax return preparation and access to the refunds and credits they depend on.

Thank you, Betsy, for your time, commitment, and the difference you continue to make for individuals and families in our communities.

We also appreciate the Helpline Center and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Dakota for recognizing the value of volunteer service across our region.

We are excited to share that Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership (ICAP) has been named a finalist in the Touchstone Energy Who Powers You Contest.

This recognition means a great deal because it highlights the work being done every day across our 14-county service area to support seniors, strengthen families, and build stronger communities.

Today, our CEO, Eric Kunzweiler, had the opportunity to interview with KELOLAND and help share more of ICAP’s story and mission.

We also want to give a special thank you to Tara Miller for nominating ICAP and for helping shine a light on the impact of our organization.

We are honored to be recognized alongside others making a difference in the communities they serve.

Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership (ICAP) is grateful for the support of several local banking partners through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines Member Impact Fund, which is helping advance ICAP’s Summit at Van Eps project in Madison.

This project includes a new commercial kitchen and community dining facility that will expand senior nutrition services and increase frozen meal production for seniors living in rural communities across South Dakota.

ICAP would like to thank BankWest - South Dakota for their partnership and support of this effort. Community banking partnerships like this help make long-term investments possible that strengthen communities and improve access to essential services.

What most people don’t see is the distance.
Miles between towns.
Hours between stops.
Because access shouldn’t depend on where you live.
