No matter what forcast you choose here are solid tips that will always be correct

1. Slow is the new fast— Drop your speed 30-50% below normal in snow/ice. Gives you way more time to react and keeps you out of the ditch and under control. Smooth throttle, smooth brakes…
2. 4×4/AWD is NOT magic — It helps you GO, not STOP. Double (or triple) your following distance — at least 8-10 seconds behind the car in front. Someone needs you home in one piece.
3. Winter survival kit in the rig — Blankets, extra coat, protein bars, water, shovel, traction mats/kitty litter, jumper cables, and a battery powered charger for your phone.
4. Tires are important — Check tread and pressure weekly — cold air drops PSI fast.
5. Practice the “brake & steer” dance — If you start sliding, ease off the brake, look and steer where you WANT to go (not at the ditch you’re scared of). ABS will pulse like crazy — let it do its thing, don’t panic and slow down so it doesn’t happen again.

🔥 WHY YOU MAY ONLY HAVE 3 MINUTES TO ESCAPE A HOUSE FIRE

A life-saving lesson everyone should know

Decades ago, fires behaved very differently.
In the 1970s–80s, people had up to 17 minutes before a room reached deadly conditions.

Today?
Many modern homes can become unlivable in just 2–3 minutes.

🔥 Modern Homes Burn Faster — Much Faster

Most furniture today contains:
• Polyurethane foam
• Plastics
• Synthetic fabrics
• Petroleum-based materials

These ignite quickly, burn intensely, produce extreme heat, and release thick toxic smoke in seconds.

A modern room can reach flashover in 2–5 minutes — a point where survival becomes nearly impossible, especially when doors or windows are open.

⚠️ Flashover Doesn’t Always Happen

In a ventilation-limited fire (not enough oxygen), the fire may:
• Slow down
• Smolder
• Build pressure and toxic gases
• Wait for air
• Then erupt violently when a door or window opens

This is why firefighters train heavily in door control and flow path management.

🔥 FIRE MOVES FAST. FASTER THAN IT USED TO.

Your best defense is preparation.âś…

🚨 WHAT THE PUBLIC MUST LEARN

âś” Working smoke alarms
Early detection is the only warning you’ll get.

âś” Close your bedroom door
A closed door slows smoke, heat, and flames long enough to escape.

âś” Have and practice an escape plan
You won’t have time to think — 3 minutes or less means you must already know the way out.

âś” Get out and stay out
Never re-enter. Conditions change faster than you can imagine.

Driver’s Training

In the fire service, driving larger emergency vehicles presents a much greater challenge than operating a normal passenger car. Getting the apparatus to the scene is only part of the job—what happens next is where training truly matters.

Today, four operator/trainees in our current driver training program had the opportunity to put some real repetitions in across multiple fireground operations.

While we didn’t capture many photos, the crews covered a wide range of skills including:

Truck company operations – window rescues, rooftop rescues, standpipe operations using aerial devices, and simulated hydraulic and electrical system failures.

Engine company operations – establishing supply lines and pumping handlines above grade level on multi-story structures.

Our trainees performed excellently today and continue to progress through the next steps of the program. Great work to everyone involved! 👏🚒
