Socialist Alternative is a national organization fighting in our workplaces, communities, and campuses against the exploitation and injustices people face every day. We are community activists fighting against budget cuts in public services; we are union activists fighting for living wage jobs and militant, democratic unions; we are people of all colors speaking out against racism and attacks on immigrants, students organizing against tuition hikes and war, women and men fighting sexism and homophobia. We believe the Republicans and Democrats are both parties of big business, and we are campaigning to build an independent, alternative party of workers and young people to fight for the interests of the millions, not the millionaires. We see the global capitalist system as the root cause of the economic crisis, poverty, discrimination, war, and environmental destruction. As capitalism moves deeper into crisis, a new generation of workers and youth must join together to take the top 500 corporations into public ownership under democratic control to end the ruling elites' global competition for profits and power. We believe the dictatorships that existed in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe were perversions of what socialism is really about. We are for democratic socialism where ordinary people will have control over our daily lives. Socialist Alternative is also in political solidarity with International Socialist Alternative, a worldwide socialist organization in 30 countries, on every continent.

We’re out at W***y St where MPD has violently shut down the encampment, arrested protestors, and is refusing to cooperate with the Office of the Independent Monitor’s investigation. To win justice and jail this killer cop, we urgently need to regroup and escalate.

We can’t rely on the Democrats, the courts, or any other institutions of capitalism to get justice for Corey. We need to do it ourselves by building as broad a movement as possible which is united around a shared strategy. We’ve been having many isolated protests and we need to join forces!

We need a mass action conference with organizations like Socialist Alternative, Madison Area DSA, Freedom, Inc., PSL Madison, Madison Teachers Inc., and encampment organizers so we can discuss tactics, demands, and escalatory actions that we can take to mount pressure from below.

We think this mass action conference should be held this Thursday 8/6 at 6PM, but we can’t organize it without the help of broader forces joining in. If you think an organization should get involved, tag them below!

We must unite to win the movement’s demands!

The Mayor directed the Madison Police Department to descend on the encampment and destroyed it this morning. And still the MPD refuses to cooperate with the independent monitor, with full support from the Mayor, the District Attorney, the City Attorney, and the Sheriff’s office.

The movement needs to mobilize and escalate our tactics with as broad and large a movement as possible in order to push back against these attempts to crush and silence us. The more united our actions and demonstrations, the larger our numbers and the safer we are. That means socialist organizations like Socialist Alternative, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the Democratic Socialists of America, along with organizations like Freedom Inc. and unions like MTI need to join forces and jointly organize a mass mobilization and mass democratic action conference in order to discuss and debate on our next steps as a coalition, united around common core demands!

That is the ONLY way we are going to force the MPD to cooperate with the investigation, to win justice for Corey, the only way we are going to jail this killer cop, win community control over the police, and defund this over-militarized police force in order to fund our schools and social services!

Eric J from the Socialist Alternative Black Caucus speaks on the movement for Justice for Corey Ruiz in Madison, and why it needs to escalate to win its demands.

The January 23 Minneapolis general strike ended Operation Metro Surge which was terrorizing Somali and other immigrant communities. We need a one-day citywide Madison strike which harnesses the power of the working class to shut down profits, and we need a broad coalition of labor unions, community organizations, and working people to build it.

Today a Black man named Corey was brutally murdered in broad daylight by the Madison Police Department.

We marched with protestors to shut down East Washington Ave up to the Capitol Square to demand that the killer cop who murdered Corey is identified and arrested.

This has come just a month after the police shot into a vehicle driving out of a Walmart parking lot in Mississippi, killing a one-year-old Black baby named Kohen Wiley. Today’s murder was clearly an act of racially-motivated police brutality.

We need to fight systemic racism with working-class action that unites working people of all races and resists capitalist divide and rule. This means tying this fight to a program to abolish ICE, slash the war budget, and tax corporations like Walmart and Target that are actively profiting off of racism, to fund healthcare, schools, and housing.

We demand:
- Identify and arrest the MPD officer who murdered Corey!
- Open the books on the MPD!
- Defund MPD to fully fund Madison Public Schools!
- Full community Control of Police! End racist policing!
- A new workers party that will actually fight to defund our $1.43 trillion defense budget, defund ICE, and fully fund social services and public education!
- Capitalism depends on racism and racism depends on capitalism. The whole system is guilty. Fight for socialism!

The growth of the far right internationally needs to be fought with more strikes - next time, longer and more broad. The strike of 1/23 and 1/30 can serve as a launchpad for further organization, for collaboration between rapid response groups, immigrant rights organizations, socialist parties, and unions. Not only should this collaboration and organization be politically independent from the Democrats, Republicans, and the whole capitalist class, but such a growing mass movement can lay the basis for a new party that fights for working-class interests using working-class methods.

The working class needs a party of its own that can organize the movement further with fighting tactics like walkouts, occupations and strikes. A party that has complete political independence from big business and the billionaires. A party that can be used as an organized force to build and support social movements and unions. The working class must pave our own way forward in the fight against Trump, ICE, and the whole rotten system!

The dems are a dead end! As the anti-ICE movement grows in Minnesota and across the country, they continue to prove that they do not have the interest of working class people. The Democrats, along with the Republicans, are the managers of US capitalism—they have different managerial styles, but at the end of the day, they are looking out for the billionaires’ bottom line. Working people must collectively take matters into own hands.

Solidarity with Minneapolis for the 1/30 call for a nationwide strike!

Rosemary speaks out at the protest. Thousands walked out of school and work, and many small businesses closed in solidarity. 1/30 was a giant stepping stone for the movement. Unions must join the fight going forward, and we must build the strength of the movement in Madison to join a national general strike on May Day to defeat ICE! Join us at our open branch meeting to learn more about our organization and how we need to get organized to fight Trump and ICE - it’s at 3PM this Sunday, February 8th at 1104 Mound St!
