Bird migration is really on the move tonight! πŸ¦β†—οΈ

With southwest winds increasing before a shift to northwest winds on Monday, many spring migrants are taking advantage of the weather window and moving northeast across the Central US and into Minnesota.

As of this evening, BirdCast radar was showing birds already in flight over Lac qui Parle County, moving northeast at about 21 mph with an average radar-estimated altitude near 700 feet. These numbers often increase later in the evening. Birds usually begin migrating about 30 to 45 minutes after sunset, with the heaviest movement often 2 to 3 hours later.

Most of this happens while we are sleeping. Many migratory birds fly at night because the air is cooler and calmer, there are fewer daytime predators, and natural night-sky cues help them navigate.

Public safety and community reminder: Tonight is a good night to turn off or dim unnecessary outdoor lights from dusk to dawn. Artificial light can disorient migrating birds and draw them toward buildings, windows, towers, and other hazards. Businesses, schools, farms, and homes can all help by turning off non-essential lights, closing blinds, and aiming needed lights downward.

Another sign that spring is here!
