On Friday, members of the Mississippi Maternal Health Innovation Program and the Mississippi Perinatal Quality Collaborative had the opportunity to attend a special tea at the UMMC Nurse-Midwife Clinic and learn more about the incredible work being done to support Mississippi mothers and babies.

It was a privilege to tour the clinic, meet members of the midwifery team, and see firsthand how patient-centered, evidence-based care is being delivered to women across our state. UMMC’s certified nurse-midwives provide comprehensive care throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond while emphasizing shared decision-making, education, and individualized support for every patient.

Celebrating members of our Maternal & Child Health Team, Teresa Jones and Hannah Sheridan, for presenting today at the Association of Mississippi Peer Support Specialists-AMPSS Conference.

Their presentation, “Lived Experience as a Lifeline: Peer Support in Perinatal Mental Health & Substance Use,” highlighted the critical role peer support specialists play in bridging gaps in care for Mississippi mothers and families navigating perinatal mental health challenges and substance use disorders.

Through collaboration, advocacy, and lived experience, we can continue building stronger systems of support and improving maternal and child health outcomes across Mississippi. We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of these important conversations and statewide efforts toward healing, recovery, and connection.

Today, the Mississippi Public Health Institute (MSPHI) hosted a Mental Health training as part of its Violence Intervention Training Series under the MS-VIP initiative, bringing together professionals from across mental health, public health, and community organizations.

Held at the MS Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, participants gained valuable insight into recognizing the signs of mental health challenges, connecting individuals to resources, and supporting those in need.

A special thank you to our featured speaker, Christiane Williams McCarty of Leading By Example-MS, for sharing her expertise and empowering attendees with practical tools to better serve themselves and their communities.

We’re proud to see such a diverse group of leaders and practitioners committed to strengthening our communities through knowledge, collaboration, and action.
Together, we continue working toward safer, healthier communities across Mississippi.
