FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Structure Fire Response – Trinity United Methodist Church
On May 11, 2026, the Madison Fire Department was dispatched to 412 W. Main Street, Trinity United Methodist Church, for a reported golf cart fire with exposures and possible extension into the structure.
Engine 3 and Car 20 arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch and encountered active fire conditions.

An additional dispatch for a working structure fire was immediately transmitted. Fire crews deployed multiple handlines to the second floor in an aggressive interior attack.
Due to the building’s construction type and rapidly deteriorating fire conditions, crews were forced to transition to defensive operations to ensure firefighter safety.

During defensive operations, the south second-floor wall and a large portion of the roof collapsed. The north wall of the structure also sustained a partial collapse.

As a result of the structural collapse, an attached garage belonging to a neighboring residence suffered major damage.

More than 65 firefighters assisted The Madison Fire Department during the incident, including:
Madison Township Fire Department
Hanover Fire Department
Jeff-Craig Fire Department

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and the City of Madison Fire Department.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported during this incident.

The Madison Fire Department would like to thank the community members and local businesses who supported first responders throughout the incident. Special thanks to Analog Coffee and Trouble Makers for making sure restrooms, food and drinks were provided till early hours of the morning!

At approximately 10:55 a.m. on May 1, 2026, Madison Fire Department units, along with Madison Police, responded to the 1900 block of Van Buren Drive for a reported structure fire with occupants that were still inside the residence.

While units were en route, first-arriving Madison Police officers confirmed that all occupants had safely exited the residence; however, several animals remained inside.

Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy fire conditions in the attic. Crews made entry into the structure to conduct fire suppression operations and search for the missing pets.

One dog and several reptiles were successfully rescued. Unfortunately, five dogs succumbed to their injuries.

The Madison Fire Department would like to recognize the actions of a neighbor, who wishes to remain anonymous. This individual not only called 911 but also assisted multiple residents out of the home. Their quick actions likely changed the outcome of this incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and the City of Madison Fire Department.
