Turtles are out and about! Drive carefully through the park to avoid crossing turtles.

If you see a box turtle trying to cross a busy road, you can pick it up and move it to the other side of the road in the direction it was facing. The turtle cannot be kept or moved to any other location.

ID that Tree! 🌳👀

Can you guess that Indiana native tree?

This is our Indiana state tree, the tulip poplar or yellow poplar! Despite the name, this tree is not a member of the poplar family at all; it is actually more closely related to our native magnolias! The bark on young trees is smooth and gray with streaks of white between the ridges, while the bark of older trees is gray-brown and features deep, long running ridges. The trunk is very straight and column-like as it grows toward the sunlight and the tree self-prunes lower branches. It's often one of the tallest trees in Indiana woodlands, growing 70 to 90 feet tall!

The flower resembles small green and yellow tulips. Be on the lookout for these blooms high in the tree canopy. They are currently blooming at Clifty Falls State Park! Thank you to Lisa Lamkin and Rhonda Barton for the great photos of tulip tree blossoms at Harmonie State Park and Lincoln State Park in 2024.
