Great Give 2026: Can We Count on You?

Each year around this time we ask you to support us in The Great Give, an event designed to strengthen nonprofits throughout the Greater New Haven area, with your contributions targeted directly to Madison organizations and causes.

The 16th Great Give officially gets underway at 8 a.m. Wednesday, May 6th, and concludes at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 7th.

Your donation of any amount will help us continue to support our community's social service, educational, cultural, historic preservation, environmental, and recreational needs. No gift is too small!

Paying It Forward—

As in years past, The Madison Foundation will award $500 prizes to two particpating Madison organizations selected in a blind draw. It's a microcosm of our mission - supporting the organizations and projects that are meeting the community's needs and helping make Madison a better place to live.

Frozen Waters, Warm Hearts: Madison Community Plunges to Honor Kate Foley McGetrick

On February 8th, a balmy 8 degree day, nearly twenty brave plungers and even more family and friends gathered along the Madison shoreline in support of the annual Kate Foley McGetrick Polar Plunge. Now in its third year, the event has become a meaningful community tradition organized by Kate’s family to celebrate her bold, spirited, and compassionate life while raising funds for the Kate Foley McGetrick Memorial Fund, managed in partnership with The Madison Foundation.

Before plungers ran into the icy waters, Kate’s sister-in-law, Meghan, took a moment to reflect on why the group gathers each year and what made Kate so special.

“For those who didn’t know her, she would be touched and honored that you showed up today,” Meaghan shared. “She would look directly in your eyes, with a big smile, and ask you questions about yourself. She was genuinely interested in other people. When you went home, she would stand out as the person you were so happy to meet that day. That was our Kate.”

Her words captured the deeper meaning behind the event. While the Polar Plunge raises important funds, it also serves as a powerful reminder of Kate’s spirit — one rooted in authentic connection, warmth, and compassion for others. Through freezing temperatures and unwavering community support, the plunge ensures that Kate’s legacy continues to live on and inspire future generations.

Currently, the fund supports a scholarship awarded each year to a graduating senior from Daniel Hand High School. The recipient is chosen for embodying the qualities that defined Kate — active involvement in sports or theater, an interest in pursuing a career in the mental health field, and, most importantly, a genuine commitment to kindness and compassion toward others.

Thanks to the generosity of participants and supporters, this year’s plunge raised approximately $12,000. As the fund continues to grow, Kate’s family hopes to expand its impact, creating additional opportunities to support causes that were meaningful to Kate, beyond the annual scholarship.
