Sheriff David Harper and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office would like to graciously thank the Lee Public Library for hosting a law enforcement appreciation day and recognizing our brave men and women who serve and protect our community every day. Their commitment goes beyond the badge-it’s about courage, dedication, and sacrifice all while standing strong in the face of uncertainty.
We held a presentation and discussed the many programs that we offer and answered questions anyone had. The kids enjoyed a K9 demonstration from K9 Garmr and K9 Kuno and even got to pet K9 Josie!
We are deeply thankful to our local community for hosting this meaningful appreciation event. Your generosity and support is deeply appreciated.

Sheriff David Harper was pleased to host the fourth Madison County Sheriff’s Office Women’s Self-Defense Class Saturday May 9, 2026, at the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Boy’s Ranch. We had a great turnout with several participants. Captain Jarrod Lauth educated the class with helpful tips to prevent an attack and simple methods to defend yourself. Self-defense isn’t only about physical techniques; it also involves developing a strong sense of situational awareness. Participants were shown how to recognize potential threats and dangerous situations before they escalate. Learning to trust your instincts and assess your surroundings can be vital to personal safety. Participants also practiced defensive punches, elbow strikes, kicks, and escape techniques. All of these valuable skills are beneficial to your daily protection. Thank you to everyone who attended our class.
For further questions or for future dates, please contact Capt. Jarrod Lauth at 850-253-3322.

*ATTENTION*
Madison County Sheriff David Harper reports that on Friday May 15, 2026, at approximately 11:47 am, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received a 911 call reporting that a shooting had just occurred at a residence on SW Brookwood Avenue near the intersection of SW Franklin Street. The caller reported that a burgundy truck pulled into the yard and a verbal altercation occurred between the occupant in the truck and individuals in the yard. The driver of the truck exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and began shooting at the persons in the yard. At least one individual shot back at the driver of the truck before he was able to flee the area in the truck. Multiple MCSO deputies and officers from the Madison Police Department arrived on scene and in the area to attempt to locate the truck driven by the suspected shooter. MCSO investigators also arrived to process the scene and collect evidence. Investigators determined that two vehicles that were parked in the yard had been struck by gunfire. A short time later, investigators learned that there was an adult male at the Madison County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room suffering from a nonlife threatening gun shot wound to his leg. Multiple items of evidence have been collected including a projectile and numerous fired shell casings. Investigators have located the unoccupied truck that the suspected shooter was driving. Based on current information, investigators believe that the suspected shooter from the truck is no longer in Madison County. Investigators will continue to collect information on the positive identification and possible location of the shooter. Once this information is confirmed arrest warrants will be obtained. If anyone has any information, please contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center at 850-973-4001 ext. 1.
