It is with great sadness that we share the passing of one of our retired K9s, Zimo, who passed away peacefully in his sleep last night at 12 years old.

Working alongside then-Captain Rick Mundt, now Chief of Police, Zimo faithfully served the Madison Police Department for nine years. After retiring in January 2024, Zimo spent his days enjoying a well-earned retirement surrounded by those who loved him most.

Today, we take a moment to recognize and honor his years of loyal service, dedication, and companionship to our department and community. He will not be forgotten. 🐾

MADISON MAN DECEASED AFTER BRIEF STANDOFF WITH POLICE | On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 3:47 PM, MPD Officers were dispatched to an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in the 1900 block of Wolf Trails Drive. Officers located a female with lacerations to her head. Officers learned the identity of the alleged attacker. The female was taken by ambulance for treatment at Kings Daughters Hospital.

MPD Officers located the suspect at a residence in the 1900 block of Adams Drive. Officers were allowed into the residence by the homeowner, and located the suspect, identified as Clinton Toland, 50 of Madison, Indiana. The Officers encountered Clinton in a hallway and directed him to come towards them. Clinton quickly brandished a handgun before entering a bathroom and locking the door. Within seconds, Officers heard what they believed to be a gunshot.

Additional Officers from MPD, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Indiana State Police arrived on scene. After forcing the bathroom door open, Clinton was located deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No Officers discharged their weapons during the incident. The Madison Police Department would like to thank our partners at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police for their quick response and assistance.

The second week of April is National Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, and we’d like to take a moment to proudly recognize our City Animal Control Officer, Janet!

Janet plays a vital role in keeping both our community and its animals safe. From rescuing lost pets and responding to emergencies to enforcing laws with compassion and care, she is a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Please join us in thanking Janet—and animal control professionals everywhere—for their hard work, courage, and commitment each and every day. 🐾
