I am deeply grateful to my hardworking and talented campaign team and the voters of District 9 who empowered me last night to 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐔𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐎𝐮𝐭. I decided to run, and my supporters endorsed me, because of our belief that all of Madison deserves equal access to city resources. That was not happening under our previous alder’s tenure. Our victory, like Susan Crawford’s in the Supreme Court race, shows the city, state, and nation that voters who have not been listened to can reach a critical mass and get the government to do the right thing.
My campaign did not accept national billionaires’ donations or thousands of dollars to fund a prominent media blitz by developers with an agenda of trying to buy my support. Our victory is a victory for all the voices in our city, state, and nation. We can win if we work together for the greater goals of all of us: equal access to resources, the right to have our voices heard and the responsibility of our representatives to act on our needs and beliefs. If they do not do their jobs representing us, we will vote them out of office.
This has been the resounding message in support of our nation’s deeply valued democratic right freedom of speech that we have protected and honored for generations and we will keep it going in Madison Wis. with hard work, partnership, collaboration and a strong effort to listen to the people, who in the end know what is important for our neighbors, the vulnerable among us and our shared future.
