Summer programs are going strong in Madison City Schools. Today, host schools welcomed visiting administrators and other education advocates to what was billed as the "Summer Learning Showcase."
It was wonderful seeing so many students engaged in learning lead by creative teachers and principals.
Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols, Assistant Superintendent Mr. Eric Terrell, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Heather Donaldson, Special Education administrators Dr. Susan Zinkil and Sped Coordinator Melissa Roberson, Federal Programs Coordinator Natalia Dooley and her team, were among the visiting administrators.
The schools were alive with dedicated teachers who are passionate for every child to succeed.
Several hundred students are taking part in various learning programs, ranging from English Learners (EL) at both the elementary and secondary level, Extended School Year programs for special education students, and middle and high school summer school.
The showcase gave visitors a first hand account of the activities and the opportunity to interact with the kids and leaders. Generous support from community partners help support some of the summer activities at schools. Even a few of our four-legged facility dogs were present.

Great discussions tonight in a joint work session of city leaders and school board members of Madison. The meet was part of a continuing effort to stay informed on city growth and its impact on school enrollment. Discussions covered issues like existing and future projected housing units, Triana growth, road projects, school enrollment trends, and other issues.
City and school board members agreed to meet jointly more often.

Eric Terrell was named interim superintendent today by the Madison City Board of Education to replace Dr. Ed Nichols when Nichols retires June 30.
It is familiar territory for Mr. Terrell, who has served as assistant superintendent for six years with Dr. Nichols, and for three years with Supt. Robby Parker.
"I can't think of a better person to stand in when I walk out the door" said Dr. Nichols, who officially retires June 30.
Terrell's selection was unanimous.
Mr. Terrell began his career with Madison City Schools in 2004, serving the next six years as a teacher in the alternative school and as a special education teacher at Discovery Middle and Liberty Middle.
He spent the next several years as an assistant principal at Bob Jones High School and James Clemens High School, then served as principal at DMS from 2015-2017.
Mr. Terrell was named assistant superintendent in 2017 with Supt. Mr. Robby Parker, served as interim superintendent from February-June in 2020 during the COVID crisis, then assistant superintendent again when Dr. Ed Nichols took over as superintendent in June 2020.
“I look forward to what you’re doing,” Nichols said. “You’ve done it before, and the last time you did it, they talk about me having a tough time coming in in 2020, but it wasn’t anything compared to what you walked into. " Schools were shut down shortly after due to Covid and Terrell helped lead the transition to technology resources, remote schooling, providing meal assistance to families and other accommodations.
Today's school board meeting also included a status summary of the school budget as Nichols approaches his retirement 14 days.
Mrs. Laverne Williams, Chief School Financial Officer for MCS, gave a brief budget summary of budget trends under Dr. Nichols.
A slide presentation used a pig image representing lean years and robust years. Mrs. Williams thanked Dr. Nichols for his financial stewardship. He reciprocated the credit to the financial management of staff and administrators.
Mr. Terrell's appointment to interim will span until a new superintendent is named. The application window is currently open and protocols allow for an interim superintendent to be eligible.

Come help clean up the outdoor classroom at Rainbow Elementary. We will be doing a general clean up of the Outdoor classroom to spruce it up for the upcoming school year! You will need to bring rakes, gardening gloves, and trash bags if you can.

Students at the SRO-led Kids Camp at Liberty Middle today got some up close visits of area emergency response vehicles. They saw an Air Evac helicopter land, as well as a visit by HEMSI, fire, police and a State Trooper's marine vessel. The one-week Kids Camps are spread across three weeks this summer. This week's group is from Madison Elementary, Columbia Elementary and St. John Catholic school. Different activities are planned each day including friendly dodge ball/kickball matches, a SWAT demo, K9 program, water day, a tour of the Cook Museum, demonstration and activity with the MPD traffic and crime scene units, a visit to the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, and more.
SRO camps are a great way to help build student trust and relationships with SROs.
