This week's book of the week is ‼️Searching for Jane Crow by Talitha L. LeFlouria ‼️

Historian Talitha L. LeFlouria uses archival documents to tell several stories of incarcerated women, both in 19th century slavery and 20th century institutions. These stories create a new perspective on the origin of mass incarceration that exposes how the connection of profit and punishment has continued to propel the extreme incarceration rates of Black women.

GWSL book of the week is...🥀 Plant Lady by Minyoung Kang 🥀
Translated by Shanna Tan

Minyoung Kang's psychological horror follows Yoohee, the owner of a small plant shop in a quiet neighborhood. After a man disrespects her plants, Yoohee's rage leads her to begin offering a new service. Suddenly, men begin to disappear from the neighborhood. Will anyone suspect the plant lady?

"Kang’s prose is both propulsive and plainspoken, and glimpses of Yoohee’s past lend the narrative significant emotional depth. The result is an exquisite ode to female rage." - Publishers Weekly

Book of the Week 📣📣
The Winds of Maracaibo by María Elena Morán, translated by Madeline Jones

Focused on a woman’s fight to get her daughter back from the ex who stole her away to America, this captivating story is one of migration, courage, family, survival and home.

“A taut, poignant snapshot of migration. . . Though writing out of Venezuela is rare for American audiences, Morán’s perspective on migration will resonate with readers familiar with themes of separation, asylum, bigotry, and resettling." - Kirkus Reviews starred review

At the 2026 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, ALA Council passed a resolution calling for the adoption and recognition of the Librarians’ and Library Workers’ Bill of Rights, a landmark framework affirming the dignity, safety and professional rights of library workers across all sectors.

The resolution responds to growing concerns about the treatment and working conditions of library professionals nationwide while underscoring the essential role librarians and library workers play as champions of intellectual freedom, equitable access to information, and lifelong learning.

The resolution also highlights the escalating challenges faced by library workers, including harassment, censorship pressures, and workplace inequities and calls on library systems at all levels to formally adopt the Bill of Rights as a guiding document for policy and practice.

Book of the Week: Beirut Fragments by Jean Said Makdisi

Originally published in 1990, Makdisi's republished memoir tells of her experience living in Beirut in the 1970s during Lebanon's fifteen-year civil war and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. The portrayal of survival captures the historical fight against displacement and erasure while also showing the tenderness of endurance.

"this powerful memoir is now being reissued for a new generation of readers at another particularly poignant time in our history….[Beirut Fragments] provides a nuanced, layered look into life during war.” —Ms. Magazine
