Monday night, we celebrated as two of our future officers, Veronica Kidwell and Joe Martin, graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training at Rockingham Community College!

Both Veronica and Joe have worked hard to reach this milestone, and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication and commitment to a career in law enforcement.

We are especially proud to recognize Veronica, who received the Most Improved Physical Fitness Award during the academy. This award is a testament to her hard work, determination, and willingness to push herself throughout the course.

Joe brings experience to the table as well. He was previously sworn in as a law enforcement officer in Virginia and completed the required portion of the North Carolina BLET program to obtain his North Carolina law enforcement certification.

We’re looking forward to welcoming both Veronica and Joe to our agency in the coming weeks and watching them begin this next chapter of their law enforcement careers.

🍎BACK TO SCHOOL 2026-2027!🏫

Today, School Resource Officers Robertson and Tallent kicked off the school year in style as they welcomed students back to Dilllard Academy and Western Rockingham Middle School. We’re excited for another year of learning, growing, and building strong relationships between our schools, students, families, and law enforcement.

Yesterday, Madison Police Chief Hester, District Attorney Gregg, Rockingham County Schools Superintendent Dr. Perkins, and other Rockingham County law enforcement leaders joined together for the School Bus Safety Press Conference.

As the 2026–2027 school year approaches, we want to remind everyone that the return of our students means an increase in traffic, school buses, and activity around our schools and neighborhoods.

Madison Police officers will be in the community helping keep students safe and enforcing traffic laws in and around school zones. Drivers are reminded to put down their phones, eliminate distractions, obey school-zone speed limits, and stop when required for school buses.

Our children should never have to compete with a driver's phone, distraction, or impatience for their safety.

When kids are near the road, your attention belongs on the road.

Officer Tallent comes to us with 23 years of law enforcement experience. She will be taking on the role of School Resource Officer at Western Rockingham Middle School. She is a great asset to the Madison Police Department, and she is excited to make meaningful connections with the students, faculty, and parents at WRMS.

Today, we celebrated the incredible career of Officer Scott Smith!

After 30 years of dedicated service in law enforcement, Officer Smith is officially off duty!

For the past 20 years, Officer Smith has faithfully served the citizens of Madison with professionalism, integrity, and dedication. During his career with the Madison Police Department, he served as a Patrol Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and most recently as the School Resource Officer at Western Rockingham Middle School, where he made a lasting impact on countless students, faculty, and staff.

Before joining the Madison Police Department, Scott also proudly served with the Stokes County Sheriff's Office, PTI Airport Authority, and the Walnut Cove Police Department.

Today, we celebrate not only a distinguished career, but a man who has devoted three decades to protecting and serving others. His leadership, compassion, and commitment to this community have left a legacy that will not be forgotten.

On behalf of the Madison Police Department and the community you have served so faithfully, thank you for your years of sacrifice and service. We wish you good health, happiness, and countless blessings as you begin this well-earned new chapter.
