On June 4th we had testing and interviews for two open Deputy positions. We had great applicants and in time will announce them.

We also had promotion interviews, with appointment of Chief Deputy Vrbsky last month, a patrol/criminal Captain position was open. The results of the day:

Today we pause to honor the brave men and women from Madison County and across our nation who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice protects the freedoms we enjoy every day in our communities.

Congratulations Deputy Cameron Lehr for your hard work and for being recognized by MADD this week. Deputy Lehr has been working hard on keeping the roads of Madison County safe!
Also, pictured with Deputy Lehr is his cousin Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Tim Flick who is stationed in Scottsbluff (Troop E), who was also recognized for his hard work.

I am happy to announce the appointment of James (Jim) Vrbsky to the rank of Chief Deputy.
Jim has worked with the Sheriff’s Office since 2003 and has worked patrol, swat and investigations. Over the years he has worked hard and earned several promotions. His rank prior to this appointment, was Captain. I know he will continue to serve Madison County with distinction!

Evo has been found, wounded but walking and happy to see us!

Two of my Deputies that are drone pilots searched for 3 hours and found Evo sleeping in some tall grass. Evo has been taken to a Veterinary Clinic and is being treated. Owners have been notified.

Highway 275 and 541st Avenue
On April 29th, 2026, at approximately 4:18 a.m., a double fatality accident occurred on Highway 275 and 541st Avenue, in Madison County 2 miles East of Meadow Grove.

Through an investigation conducted on the scene, it was determined that a Blue 2018 Honda Odyssey traveling westbound on Highway 275 crossed over the center line. This caused a head on collision with a 2026 Peterbilt Tractor Truck hauling an empty tank trailer traveling Eastbound. The Honda spun around and came to rest facing Eastbound in the Westbound Lane. The Peterbilt came to rest facing Eastbound in a field on the Southside of Highway 275.

The driver of the Honda Odyssey, 51-year-old Lynn Phelps of Hastings, OK, and the passenger of the Honda Odyssey, 51-year-old Robert Phelps of Hastings, OK, were pronounced deceased on the scene. Next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the Peterbilt Tractor Truck , 71-year-old Michael Klasna of Emmet, NE was transported to Faith Health to be treated for injuries.

Seatbelts were worn by all involved.

Agencies involved were; Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Meadow Grove Fire and Rescue, and Battle Creek Fire and Rescue. The accident is still under investigation by The Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
