Update on Temporary Preservation Measures for the Surf Club Seawall
As many residents and visitors may be aware, portions of the old seawall at The Surf Club have experienced significant wear over the last few winter seasons. This wall was originally installed many decades ago, and we are beginning to see signs it has reached the end of its useful life. In response, the Town of Madison, in coordination with its professional engineering advisors, has been actively developing and implementing strategies to reinforce and stabilize the old seawall in preparation for the upcoming beach season, as well as mitigate its impact on the newly restored Garvan Point.
As part of these efforts, eco-blocks have been strategically placed along the footings on the beach-facing side of the old seawall. These eco-blocks are designed with integrated rebar, allowing them to be securely positioned to provide additional structural support. To ensure the safety of beachgoers, crews will cover the exposed rebar with sandbags this week. Naturally occurring tidal changes will continue to raise water levels and provide additional sand to cover exposed areas; crews will supplement the sand on the beach throughout the coming months as needed.
In addition, the Town will be installing dune fencing along the upland side of the seawall. This measure is intended to discourage individuals from climbing or jumping off the wall, enhancing public safety. The placement of the fencing has been carefully considered so that it will not obstruct sightlines from the picnic area, due to the natural slope of the land leading down to the seawall.
These improvements are part of the Town’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing The Surf Club while ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all visitors. As part of the Surf Club Master Planning Process—an effort shaped by valuable input from community surveys and public information sessions—the Town will be evaluating long-term options to preserve the beach for future generations.
Residents are encouraged to use caution while visiting the beach area, and stay informed and engaged as this important work progresses.
