Please join us on September 11th for a special ceremony marking the 25th Anniversary of 9/11. This event will be held at Toyota Field. Gates open at 8:00am and the ceremony begins at 8:30am. There will also be a Stair Climb at the conclusion of the ceremony, approx. 9:00am. Both events are free to attend or participate.

Just after 3 PM yesterday afternoon, Madison Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to the report of a house on fire in the 1200 Block of Cathedral Cir. Battalion 1 and Engine 1 arrived on scene to find heavy fire and smoke showing from a single story wood frame quadplex. The fire was in one residence but moving quickly with the wind from the storms.

Engine 1 stretched a single attack line to begin fire attack. When Engine 2 arrived on scene they gave Engine 1 their tank water, stretched a second line to back up the first one, and both companies began primary searches of the two affected residences within the quadplex. Engine 2 also secured their own water source and supported Engine 1.

Ladder 1 arrived on scene with a crew of four and split into two separate crews. The first one made the roof and supported the attack teams with vertical ventilation by cutting two holes and the second half of the crew began softening the building by forcing garage doors and man doors. They also searched exposure units.

Engine 3 arrived on scene and took the Delta Side and their Driver lined the rear tailboard up to stretch their 350' extended hose line to another exposure unit to begin protecting that area and stopping extension. Engine 4 also assisted in fire attack efforts.

When Battalion 1 had an all clear on the searches from all units, he put all hands to work supporting fire attack efforts, opening up for extension, and overhauling the fire.

A total of four attack lines were used to control and extinguish the fire, two of which were our preconnected 350’ extended lines due to the setback of the building.

We are sorry to everyone affected by this fire, but we want you to know that Madison firefighters did everything they could to hold the fire to the residence of origin while battling the fast moving winds.

Your Madison firefighters had a busy time last night as the storms moved through our area. While multiple units were tied up on fire alarm activations due to lightning, trees down, and other natures of events; a structure fire possibly caused by lightning was dispatched in the 100 Block of Manor Drive. The only units available at the time were Engine 1, Ladder 1, and Battalion 1.

Those units arrived on scene to find an active fire in the attic of the home and stretched a single attack line to begin extinguishment. The occupants had exited prior to department arrival but a quick search sill took place and proved negative.

Ladder 1 nosed their bucket in to make the roof via aerial ladder to support the attack team with vertical ventilation. This removes smoke and heated gasses from the home's attic space to aid in containing the fire to the area of origin and stopping lateral spread.

While operating with limited personnel is not the goal, this fire is a prime example of adapting and doing what you have to do during high call volume moments. These firefighters performed exceptionally well with just six firefighters on scene and a Battalion Chief who was also working and aiding those crews. They covered fire attack, search, and vent within a matter of minutes.

We appreciate all of our firefighters and their hard work on every call they respond to, regardless of the nature.

We would like to take a moment to congratulate six of our firefighters who graduated from the Alabama Fire College’s Paramedic Program today. This is a grueling year long program that consists of many classes, almost five hundred clinical hours, and requires a lot of sacrifices and dedication. They not only graduated from this program today, but every single one of them passed their National Registry exam on their very first attempt and will soon be treating patients in the field.

We teach all our of classes and do all of our skill stations at the Madison Public Safety Annex. So we would also like to thank Captain Richard Ennis for leading this group as the Alabama Fire College’s site coordinator at Madison Fire and Rescue.

We would also like to thank the Alabama Fire College and all of our community partners such as our area hospitals, surgery centers, and HEMSI where these students do their clinical rotations that include pediatric, obstetric, psychiatric, emergency room, surgical trauma, and much more to meet the required skills, hours, and patient contacts needed to graduate.

Well, to not be out done by C-Shift, A-Shift decided they wanted in on the action too. The beginning of their tour started out with a report of a vehicle into a house just after shift change. Then, throughout their tour they responded to 53 calls for service ranging from medical calls, vehicle accidents, a shooting victim, and more.

Then just after 11PM, they were dispatched to the 100 Block of Paul Revere Drive for the report of a house on fire. Engine 3 arrived on scene a few minutes later to find a two-story single family dwelling with smoke showing and located a fire that was still in the early growth stages due to their rapid response. A single attack line was stretched and the fire was extinguished quickly. The searches were negative and all companies returned to service after checking for extension and overhauling the fire area.

They also took time on their second day to freshen up the ground ladders on Ladder 1 by getting the tips and balance points repainted after their daily workout.
