Behind the Headset: Community Spotlight

Chaos comes in… calm answers.

Meet Kayla S.

Kayla has been serving Monroe County 911 for 3 years and came into dispatch with one goal in mind: finding a way to make a positive impact on the people around her.

Outside of work, Kayla enjoys reading, baking, fishing, and spending time with her family.

When asked what she wishes the community knew about dispatchers, Kayla shared that dispatchers do far more than simply answer phones. Behind the scenes, dispatchers are coordinating with responders, gathering critical information, contacting tow services, and even providing life-saving instructions to callers... often all at the same time.

Kayla believes one of the most important qualities a dispatcher can have is the ability to compartmentalize. In emergency communications, staying calm and focused is essential in order to help callers and responders as effectively as possible.

Her advice to callers during an emergency:
Take a moment to breathe. The more composed you are, the easier it will be to answer questions. Those questions help us get the correct responders there as quickly as possible.

We’re thankful to have Kayla behind the headset serving our community every day.

Meet Jordyn, known to our dispatch crew as “Baby Goddard”, our youngest team member and a standout dispatcher since joining us in December 2025. In just a few months he’s answered over 2,000 calls for service and has shown an exceptional ability to step into the role from day one. Jordyn brings remarkable compassion and empathy to every caller, reflecting a true servant’s heart... qualities no doubt influenced by his roots (his dad serves as a Monroe County Sheriff's Officer). His peers nominated him for Dispatcher of the Month because of his quick learning, calm professionalism, and unwavering care for the community. We are incredibly proud of Jordyn and grateful for the dedication he brings to our 911 team. Congratulations

🚨 RESPONDER SAFETY REMINDER 🚨

When you see flashing lights on the side of the road, please remember someone’s family member is standing just feet away from traffic.

Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, tow operators, and highway workers all face dangerous conditions every day while working roadside incidents. A distracted driver moving over “just a little too late” can change lives forever.

✔️ Slow down
✔️ Move over when possible
✔️ Stay alert
✔️ Put the phone down

A few extra seconds of caution from drivers can mean everyone makes it home safely at the end of the shift. ❤️

Help us protect those who protect and serve our community every day. 🚓🚑🚒

🚨 WHEN NOT TO CALL 911 WEDNESDAY 🚨

Your fast food order being wrong is not a police, fire, or medical emergency. 🍔😅

We understand it’s frustrating when your fries are missing or your burger has everything on it except what you ordered… but 911 can’t send an officer to investigate the Case of the Missing Nuggets.

911 lines are for emergencies where someone’s life, safety, or property is in immediate danger. Calling for non-emergencies can delay help for someone who truly needs it.

For restaurant issues, your best option is to contact the business directly.

Save 911 for emergencies only. ❤️☎️

🚨 TRIVIA TUESDAY ANSWER 🚨

The correct answer is…

✅ C. The system is estimating a location based on available data

A plotted location does not always mean an exact GPS-verified location. Depending on the type of phone, signal, carrier information, and available technology, the map may show an estimated area based on nearby towers, GPS data, Wi-Fi, or other location services.

That’s why dispatchers still ask questions like:
📍 “What’s the address?”
📍 “What city are you in?”
📍 “Do you see any landmarks?”

Even when we can see a map, confirming your location helps us get responders to you faster and more accurately. 🚓🚑🚒

Thanks for playing along this week! 👏

🦉❤️ This beautiful owl recently endured something heartbreaking after its leg became caught in a trap. Despite the injury, it had reportedly been flying with the trap attached for several days before help finally arrived.

One of our dispatchers, Amanda, had the opportunity to assist Larry Eaton in rescuing the owl and helping get it to safety so it could receive the care it needed.
Dispatchers are often known as the calm voice behind the headset, but compassion and service don’t stop when the phones are quiet. We’re proud of the caring people behind the scenes who are always willing to help — whether it’s a person, a pet, or wildlife in distress.

We’re hopeful this beautiful bird makes a full recovery. 🦉✨
