Spring peepers are peeping! Spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer) are small frogs that begin to call across Kentucky from mid-February through early summer. They are brown with an x-shaped mark on their back and have a noticeably high-pitched call. You can hear them around water with wooded areas nearby. They camouflage very well with tree bark and leaf litter, so they are typically hard to find. They eat small invertebrates at night making them nocturnal predators. Females attach their eggs to submerged vegetation and can lay hundreds. Tadpoles metamorphose in 2-3 months and feed on algae and microorganisms.

Spring peepers live in moist wooded areas. They also like wet and grassy fields, marshes, ephemeral pools, and other wetlands. Ephemeral pools are water holes that are seasonal and dry up later on. This makes a great place to lay eggs because there’s less predation. Spring peepers will hibernate under logs and behind tree bark.

These small chorus frogs let us know spring is on they way! Many amphibians will soon be active and breeding. The best thing we can do for all amphibians is preserving our wetlands!
