KY 70 to be Blocked Briefly Next Week in Madisonville
Company Moving Equipment for Utility Provider

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (May 16, 2026) – A contractor working on behalf of the Kentucky Municipal Energy Agency (KYMEA) plans to temporarily block portions of two state highways to move oversized equipment in Hopkins County next week.

Beginning 9 a.m. each day, Monday through Thursday, the contractor will close KY 70 between mile points 16.2 mm (at the Paducah & Louisville Railroad Depot) and 16.9 (Pleasant View Road). The equipment will then turn onto Pleasant View Road (KY 1302), traveling from mile point 2.9 to mile point 1.7 mm (Bean Cemetery Road). From there it will travel on Bean Cemetery and AC Slaton Road to the job site.

During previous moves as part of this project, KY 70 was reopened within 45-minutes. The entire move was completed within two hours.

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office will assist with traffic control throughout the operation.

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and use caution in the area.

Deputies are currently working a collision on I-69 south of the 114 mile-marker involving a semi tractor trailer. Currently there is only one lane open for northbound and southbound traffic so expect delays on your morning drive through this area.

Property Tax Reminder:

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office will close Property Tax collections, for the 2025 tax year, on April 15, 2026, at 4pm. At that time, all unpaid bills will be forwarded to the Hopkins County Clerk’s Office to resume collections with additional fees.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (April 1, 2026)– The southbound slow lane of I-69 in Hopkins County is now open. The northbound fast lane remains closed while repairs are monitored.

Repairs to the damaged roadway were completed

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (March 31, 2026) – Crews have completed the process of filling the hole that opened alongside the northbound fast lane of I-69 in Hopkins County. Both the north and southbound slow lanes will remain closed overnight to allow the flowable fill time to cure fully.

KYTC worked in coordination with personnel from the Kentucky Division of Abandoned Mine Lands, who were on the scene all day today to assess the situation and develop a repair plan. It was determined that the damage was caused by mine subsidence.

It has been confirmed that coal mining occurred at this location more than 60 years ago, prior to the construction of the former Pennyrile Parkway, now I-69. KYTC is working with the Kentucky Division of Abandoned Mine Lands to assess the area and develop a permanent repair plan.

Motorists are urged to use caution, obey posted signs, and drive carefully for the safety of workers and fellow drivers.

UPDATE: Fast Lane of I-69 NB Blocked at 111 mm in Hopkins County
KYTC to block SB fast lane

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (March 31, 2026)– The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is in the process of establishing a southbound fast lane closure at the 111-mile point, across the median from the northbound closure.

While the existing damage to the roadway is on the northbound side of the interstate, the southbound closure will allow room for equipment to be put in place in the median to assess and repair the roadway.

The duration of these closures remains unknown at this time. Motorists are urged to watch for signage and personnel working in close proximity to traffic flow.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (March 31, 2026) – The northbound fast lane of I-69 in Hopkins County is blocked just north of Mortons Gap, at the 111-mile point.

Crews are investigating possible roadway damage caused by ground settlement. This is at the same location where the right lane was blocked late last summer.

Motorists are urged to watch for signage and personnel working in close proximity to traffic flow.

***Public Notice: Oversized Load Transport – Traffic Impacts Expected***

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents of temporary traffic impacts expected next week due to the transport of large equipment associated with the Kentucky Municipal Energy Agency’s Energy Center I project.

*Transport Dates: Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (next week, March 25, 26, and 27th)

*Equipment Transport Route:
From Paducah & Louisville Railway
North on Highway 70
Left onto Pleasant View Road
Right onto Bean Cemetery Road
Left onto AC Slaton Road (project site)

These transports will involve oversized loads, which may result in intermittent delays, temporary road slowdowns, and brief traffic stoppages along the route.

*Motorists are encouraged to:
Plan for extra travel time in these areas
Use alternate routes when possible
Follow directions from law enforcement officers assisting with traffic control

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office will be present to help ensure public safety and minimize disruptions.
