The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a hit and run collision in the parking lot of Walmart in Hanson that occurred at 10:53 A.M. on August 13th, 2026. The pictured vehicle is suspected of hitting another vehicle and leaving the scene. If this vehicle belongs to you or you know who it belongs to, please contact Deputy Syimone Baker at (270) 821-5661.

I want to sincerely thank Judge Jack Whitfield for taking time out of his Sunday afternoon to come and administer the oath of office as I begin serving as your new Sheriff.

Words cannot express how proud and humbled I am to lead this incredible group of dedicated professionals. These men and women work tirelessly every day to serve and protect our community, and I am honored to stand alongside them serving Hopkins County.

Commonwealth v. Larry Harvey, Hopkins Circuit Court Case 25-CR-082

At the conclusion of a two-day jury trial, which began on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, a Hopkins County Circuit Court jury returned a verdict finding Larry Harvey guilty of two counts of 1st Degree Trafficking in 2 or More Grams of Methamphetamine, as the result of an investigation conducted by Det. Brad Ross from the Hopkins County KY Sheriff's Office and the Madisonville-Hopkins County VICE/Narcotics Unit.

During trial, Commonwealth’s Attorney Hannah Kington-Jarvis presented the testimony of HCSO Detective Brad Ross, HCSO Sgt. Ryan Bailey, MPD Det. Austin Madden, MPD Lt. Bill Strader, Rafael Osella, Wendy Williams, and a confidential informant. The Commonwealth commends the collaborative effort of the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office and the Madisonville Police Department in investigating illegal drug activity in our community and the testimony of the officers.

The jury also heard evidence of the Defendant’s prior felony criminal history and found him guilty of being a 1st Degree Persistent Felony Offender. The jury recommended a sentence of 15 years total, and the Defendant must serve 10 years before he is eligible for parole. Sentencing will be held on September 28, 2026.

Today I have the honor of introducing myself as the new Sheriff of Hopkins County.
My name is Charles Young II or Charlie as I'm know to most.
I was born and raised in Hopkins County, Kentucky, where I have spent my life serving the community I proudly call home. I attended Madisonville North Hopkins High School and graduated in 1988.
Before entering law enforcement, I worked in the construction industry for ten years. In 1998, I began my law enforcement career with the Owensboro Police Department. After four years, I returned to Hopkins County to continue my career with the Madisonville Police Department.
During my 16 years with the Madisonville Police Department, I served in a variety of leadership and investigative roles, including Patrol Officer, Detective, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. As a supervisor, I oversaw patrol operations, administrative functions, and criminal investigations, gaining extensive experience in managing personnel, operations, and public safety initiatives. I retired from the Madisonville Police Department in 2017 after two decades of dedicated service.
In December 2017, I joined the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office as a Road Deputy. In 2019, following the retirement of Chief Deputy Will Coursey, Sheriff Matt Sanderson appointed me to serve as Chief Deputy. In that role, I was responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Sheriff's Office and worked alongside Sheriff Sanderson to ensure the agency provided professional and effective service to the citizens of Hopkins County.
Following Sheriff Sanderson's retirement, I was honored to be appointed Sheriff of Hopkins County by Judge/Executive Jack Whitfield. As Sheriff, I remain committed to providing strong leadership, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, and serving the citizens of Hopkins County with integrity, transparency, and accountability.
My educational and professional training includes an Associate Degree from the University of Kentucky. I am also a graduate of the Academy of Police Supervision, the Criminal Justice Executive Development Program, the Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officers Course, and the FBI-LEEDA Leadership Trilogy. These educational opportunities have strengthened my leadership abilities and reinforced my commitment to continuous professional development in law enforcement.
