πŸ”₯ FIRE WEATHER WATCH – SATURDAY πŸ”₯

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for much of Iowa on Saturday, as conditions become favorable for rapid fire growth. Strong winds, very low humidity, and dry fuels will combine to create a dangerous setup across the state.

The watch is in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday evening, with the highest risk during the afternoon and early evening hours when conditions peak.

Southwest winds will increase to 20–25 mph with gusts up to 30–40 mph, while humidity levels drop to around 15%. These dry and windy conditions will allow any fire that starts to spread quickly and become difficult to control.

Any fires that develop could spread rapidly, especially in open fields and grassy areas. Even small sparksβ€”such as from equipment, vehicles, or outdoor burningβ€”could quickly escalate.

Statewide Tornado Drill – Boone County Siren Policy

This morning (Wednesday, March 25) at 10:00 AM, Iowa will conduct the Statewide Tornado Drill as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week. This will coincide with the weekly NOAA Weather Radio test.

⚠️ Boone County will NOT be activating Outdoor Warning Sirens during this drill.

Why aren’t sirens being used?

πŸ“Œ Boone County sirens are tested monthly on the 1st Monday of each month at 1 PM
πŸ“Œ Activating them outside this schedule can create unnecessary confusion for the public

What should you do during the drill?

Even without sirens, this is a great time to practice your tornado safety plan:
βœ… Identify your safe shelter location (lowest level, interior room, away from windows)
βœ… Ensure you have multiple ways to receive warnings (NOAA Weather Radio, AlertIowa, apps)
βœ… Check your emergency kit (water, flashlight, first aid, etc.)
βœ… Talk through your plan with family or coworkers

Boone County Outdoor Warning Siren Policy

Sirens are intended to warn those outdoors of immediate danger and are activated when:
βœ… A Tornado Warning is issued by the National Weather Service
βœ… A trained spotter confirms a tornado or funnel cloud
βœ… Sustained winds of 70+ mph are occurring or expected
βœ… 1.75" (golf ball size) hail is reported and causing damage

What to expect during a real activation:
βœ” Sirens sound for 3–5 minutes
βœ” May re-sound every 10–15 minutes while the threat continues
❌ There is NO all-clear siren β€” always monitor trusted information sources

πŸ“’ Stay Weather Aware!

MFD was fortunate enough to get some prescribed burns in before this most recent cold snap. We have much warmer temps on the way so you will see us conducting more of these in the near future. This is a friendly reminder that if you have some property that you are planning on burning, but aren't sure that you can do it without being certain that you can keep it in control or safe, dont be afraid to reach out to us. Its better for us to be there from the beginning to keep it in check instead of being behind the ball and fighting an unpredictable potentially dangerous situation.

🚨 Iowa Fire Weather Alert – Red Flag Warning Wednesday 🚨

Iowa will be dealing with critical fire weather conditions on Wednesday as a powerful west wind combines with extremely dry air and dormant grasses across the state. This is the type of setup where fires can start easily and spread rapidly in a matter of minutes.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of central, north central, and south central Iowa from 10 AM to 7 PM, with a similar warning in place for parts of northeast Iowa from Noon to 7 PM.

Winds will be the biggest concern, blowing from the west at 25 to 35 mph with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph. At the same time, humidity levels will drop into the low teens and 20% range, creating an environment where vegetation can ignite quickly.

The National Weather Service urges everyone to avoid outdoor burning and use extreme caution with anything that could produce a spark. Under these conditions, any fire that develops will likely spread out of control fast.

🚨 FIRE WEATHER WATCH FOR MUCH OF IOWA – WEDNESDAY 🚨

The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening for much of Iowa due to dangerous fire-spread conditions.

⚠️ Outdoor burning is NOT recommended.

That includes burn piles, ditch burning, fire pits, and anything that could spark a grass fire.

A Fire Weather Watch means conditions are coming together that could lead to a Red Flag Warning if they worsen.
