On Sunday, May 31st, at approximately 1:00 pm the Magee Police Department received multiple 911 calls regarding shots fired on the east side of the city.

The incident was initially reported as possibly involving two separate locations. After officers arrived, checked the area, and began gathering information, it was determined to involve one incident location. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported at this time.

During the incident, a homeowner reportedly returned fire after allegedly being shot at. That portion of the incident remains under review, and all facts and circumstances will be examined as part of the investigation.

As of now, one individual is in custody in connection with this case. All persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

I want to acknowledge the officers who responded quickly and professionally to a dangerous call. They secured the area, checked for victims, began locating evidence, and worked to get the situation under control. I also want to recognize our investigators, who are continuing to gather evidence, speak with witnesses, review available video, and follow the facts where they lead.

The Magee Police Department will gather all available evidence, document the facts, and take every lawful step necessary to assist in building a complete case for court.

Anyone with information, video footage, doorbell camera footage, or any detail that may assist investigators is asked to contact the Magee Police Department.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Charges may be upgraded, reduced, dismissed, or remain the same as each case moves through the court process.

The Magee Police Department will be participating in the Memorial Day Click It or Ticket campaign to encourage seat belt use and save lives. The roads will be busy with families traveling for cookouts, ball games, church events, family gatherings, and vacations. Before you pull out of the driveway, take two seconds and buckle up.

A seat belt should be worn properly not behind your back, not behind your shoulder, and not under your arm. This Memorial Day, honor those who did not make it home by doing your part to make sure you and your family do.

Today, the Magee Police Department honors and remember Deputy Marshal Willis Washington Hemby.

Deputy Marshal Hemby gave his life in the line of duty on January 30, 1928, while serving the citizens of Magee and Simpson County. Though nearly a century has passed, his sacrifice has not been forgotten.

Every badge worn today carries the memory of those who served before us. Deputy Marshal Hemby answered the call during a different time, but the duty was the same. Protect the community. Stand for the law. Serve with courage.

His name is part of our department’s history, and his sacrifice reminds us that law enforcement service has always come with risk, responsibility, and honor.

We remember Deputy Marshal Willis Washington Hemby.

The Magee Police Department has arrested the following individuals in two separate incidents:

Desserae Vaughn and Joseph Lexia
Child Abuse
Child Neglect
Deprivation of Substantial Necessities
Possession of Controlled Substances
Possession of Paraphernalia
Animal Cruelty x3

The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office is also conducting a homicide investigation into the death of an infant who was in their care. That investigation remains ongoing, and no further details will be released by the Magee Police Department at this time.
